2012 European Grand Prix discussion thread

Postby East Londoner » 20 Jun 2012, 01:58

It's only dawned on me this afternoon that there's an F1 race this weekend. There's absolutely nothing on Autosport about the grand prix, and hardly any musings on here. So, this is awkward. :|

EDIT: Only one DRS zone this year for Valencia...
The 1990s were better. Fact. And you bloody well know it.

Murray Walker: There's a car coming into the pits now, they're so unreliable with all those electronics on board.
James Hunt: Actually, Murray, one of his wheels has just fallen off...

It's the Valencia GP, what did you expect? Hardly anyone is interested about it at all!

On the BBC this time isn't it? I'll still watch most of practice, quali and the race religiously. Even if it's Valencia.
For explanation on recent inactivity, please read 2nd post on 2nd page of 'just nipping out' thread. Thank you.

You'll be disappointed to know that the current forecasts for Valencia are sun, sun and more sun for the upcoming weekend, so it looks like the weather is going to have a pretty negligible effect. That said, with the temperature likely to be quite high, the chances of high thermal degradation are increasing, so there may be some variation introduced through that aspect.
I guess that one of the few points of interest could be Paul Hembery's recent remarks about Schumacher, as he seems to believe that Schumacher will break his run of bad fortune with a very strong result and perhaps even win. http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/100478

That's quite rich coming from Pirelli considering Schumacher's scathing comments about the quality of their tyres. But, hey, I'm also not ruling out a MSC win. It's 2012, everything can happen and surely the guy has had more than his fair share of bad luck this season already.

I couldn't resist. And yes, I'm aware that tyres don't really blow out anymore, but 'Hits the cliff' really does not have the same ring to it.

I'd nominate someone for the win, but I really can't be bothered thinking about this race - scratch what I said earlier, I'm definitely watching BTCC instead.

I too have been busy, watching the Euros, and enjoying my summer through other means, to care about Valencia this weekend. High temperatures mean that Red Bull and Ferrari are probably favorites. Button might be able to turnaround in form as well, if the temperatures will do some of the tyre heating for him. Here's to an Alonso win, Senna points, and a HRT ahead of a Virgin.

It may not be entirely impossible that is the case - Bernie did indicate some time ago that the Circuit de Catalunya was thinking of alternating with Valencia for the Spanish GP, but there have been some doubts that Valencia could afford to pay FOM's fees even on a biannual basis.
Even though the ticket prices are some of the lowest amongst the European venues (being subsidised by the regional government in an attempt to drum up more interest), for obvious reasons it has never really developed much of a following, and pressure on the regional authorities to reign in spending means that the future of the event is already under question now, let alone whether it will survive until 2014 (when its original contract expires).

Hey Mario, has the deal with Paul Ricard for the French GP been inked yet?

F1000X wrote:Hey Mario, has the deal with Paul Ricard for the French GP been inked yet?

As far as I am aware, the negotiations between the French authorities, the owners of Spa-Francorchamps (who were looking into sharing the event with the French) and FOM are still ongoing.

The last reports that I recall seeing indicated that talks were progressing reasonably well before the French elections, although negotiations between the French and Belgians over sharing the race were a little less advanced than those between FOM and the French representatives. There were still some negotiations to sort out over the finer details of the financing - Bernie mentioned that the French representatives were around €2 million short of the fee FOM initially offered - but a general consensus seemed to be close by before the elections (which has lead to a halt in negotiations whilst the political situation stabilised).
Now, though, the situation is slightly less clear - it looks like Hollande and the French Socialist parties are not especially keen to back the proposal for a race at Paul Ricard (perhaps because Paul Ricard sits in a region that has tended to back Sarkozy and the centre right in national elections) and might be trying to shift the race back to Magny Cours (which, as it happens, is a region where the Socialists have quite strong support). The teams and FOM don't seem to be all that keen to return to Magny Cours, so Bernie is thought to have offered worse terms for a return to Magny Cours as an intentional disincentive to going there; as a result, negotiations seem to have gone slightly backwards, if anything, rather than forwards.

No, thank you. I will not be watching Valencia. I have regretted it every time I did watch it and when the circuit was new and I watched qualifying, it was so boring that I agreed to drive my mother to the grocery store during qualifying, which did surprise her. What was even more surprising is that we met my uncle at the grocery store who was the one who introduced the whole family to F1 in the early 70s. Go figure.

Valencia Marina is too technical a track to produce interesting races. My guess is the European GP will have a winner amongst the 7 who have already won a race this year.

Hey now, let's not get too crazy about this. I think that Grosjean has exceeded my wildest expectations thus far and he has a legit chance to win a race this year. That said, it's a tough season full of tough competitors and I will still be genuinely suprised if he wins one. Not because of his talent level, but because of the parity thoughout the grid. I'd be less surprised if Kimi won a race.

What's more, I think all the drivers are terrific, and I don't really dislike any of them. They all represent something worthwhile about the sport.

To that end, I'll try to say what I like about each of them, and maybe others can do the same. (bear in mind that I don't know anything about several of them, so my impressions will be short and maybe quite wrong)

Vettel - An intelligent, funny, impetuous young guy. He's younger than my youngest sibling!
Webber - Straight-talking, good sense of humor, priorities.

Button - Good natured, intelligent, willing to laugh.
Hamilton - Exciting, surprisingly humble, emotional.

Alonso - Wears his sense of superiority well (I mean that in a good way). He believes in himself and there's nothing wrong with that.
Massa - Surprisingly funny and frank.

Schumacher - Mightily impressed by his attitude this year. When I heard him say he was going to hug his crew after his wheel fell off it almost brought a tear to my eye.
Rosberg - Serious, but nice, seems to like his job.

Raikkonen - No bullshite, straight answers, even if they are mundane.
Grosjean - Exudes joy at doing what he loves. There's nothing forced or fake about his smile on the podium.

Di Resta - Reserved and business-like, doesn't complain much, but can have fun too.
Hulkenberg - (I don't know much about him) Looks like he's tough to deal with on the track sometimes, but I've heard nothing horrible about him.

Kobayashi - I love his back-story, he seems to really appreciate his fans, and he's funny.
Perez - Shows some of the joy of Grosjean, but also ambition. Plus he's from my continent.

Ricciardo - Both Toro Rosso guys are too new for me to know much about them, but they both carry the imprimitur of the red bull junior program.
Vergne - Same

Maldonado - A bit nuts on track, and quite ambitious. Not a complex character perhaps, but knows what he wants.
Senna - A great, and long backstory. Really seems in-tune with the requirements of a modern grand prix driver. Gracious.

Kovalainen - A quiet Finn, but very skilled. (I have a soft spot for Finns)
Petrov - A neat guy, with a mischievous grin.

De la Rosa - Seriously, what's not to like?
Karthikeyan - I doubt he'd like this description, but a bit of a lovable loser. He's got the skill to pilot an F1 car, but he'll never be in a quick one.

Glock - Seems a bit down on his luck, perhaps not performing his best (both of which I can identify with most strongly).
Pic - Again, I know very little, but he's young and French, So he must be a polite guy right?
It's just unbelievable...that Formula 1 could be such a ridiculous melange of idiots.

Please get the bathplug over yourself, you're really pissing me off.

I've got a great idea for a pay-per-view:

Kostas22 vs Eurobrun representing Grosjean and Raikkonen in a loser follows the muppet Bahar out the door match

Maybe they'll wipe each other out and give us all a break.

Daniel is another very smiley, cheerful guy like Romain - Mark is the no-nonsense Aussie, Daniel is the sunny Aussie. There was a period where F1 drivers always seemed very serious and dry, even on the podium. Ricciardo is one who can't stop smiling when interviewed.

It's a bit worrying when most of the entertainment seems to have happened off the track, according to Adam Cooper's account of a conversation between Hamilton and a German TV reporter that got off to a rather awkward start.
German TV reporter: "Jenson, how do you judge the whole season?"
LH: "My name's Lewis..."
Martin Brundle, on watching a replay of Grosjean spinning:
"The problem with Grosjean is that he want to take a look back at the corner he's just exited"
