If you could interview any Formula 1 driver past or present?

The place for anything and everything else to do with F1 history, different forms of motorsport, and all other randomness

If you could interview any Formula 1 driver past or present?

Postby FullMetalJack » 21 Jan 2010, 06:52

Who would it be? This can be dead or alive. Would it be Senna or Prost? Schumacher? Jim Clark? Or would you want to interview a less successful driver, HWNSNBM, Badoer, or even Gugelmin.

I'd personally choose Roberto Moreno as he has driven for so many reject teams and I would really want to ask him how he qualified, or even pre-qualified for the 1992 Monaco GP. Obviously HWNSNBM was secretly helping him. What about you?

Tazio Nuvolari, having just driven the Minardi to victory, apparently he could get the worst car on the grid to win.

Easy. I would interview Deletraz to ask him, what WAS he doing. :D

Obviously it would be interesting to getting into the heads of Senna and Schumacher, and also to learn about the older times of Hill and Clark. From a less successful persons perspective, I would love to interview Pierluigi Martini and ask all about his Minardi times! Patrese would be good also just to understand how much F1 changed over his years (same can be said for Barrichello).

I'd want to talk to Graham Hill, just to tell him what his son accomplished.

If I had the time and wasn't so busy with other things (uni), I could try going over to the Stefan GP factory here in Cologne and try making an interview with key personnel from the team for the F1Rejects website.
But besides being too busy, I wouldn't know exactly what to ask them.
“Mexico City is a better place to hold the (Mexican GP) than Cancun,” said Ecclestone. “In more or less any city around the world you could ask people ‘where is Mexico City?’ and they would say ‘Mexico’.”

Yup. I've heard a couple of his interviews, pretty sure that'd be great.

Another obvious choice would be James Hunt. I'd make it a double header and interview him and Patrese simultaneously; either they'd kiss and make up, or it'd turn into a boxing match.

Really, win-sin situation there. ;)

3/10/1970 F3 Crystal Palace, Morgan tries to pass Hunt on the outside of South Tower on the final lap. Result big accident. Hunt punched Morgan dead opposite me but on the other side of the track. Up until that point I'd considered Hunt only to be dangerous whilst actually on the track. :)

But for me, definitely Jim Clark, Gerhard Berger and Luca Badoer.

I would have done it. I can honestly tell you with a straight face that I'd rather drive a rubbish Ferrari than a race-winning anything else.

That's not unheard of, and I think Alesi has said the same himself.

The sad bit is I can honestly tell you I'd rather driver a dog, 3-wheeled Williams than anything else.

Whoa whoa whoa! :o OK, I'll have to admit that Jean is one of my favourite drivers of all time, but I'm going to have to bat for him here. I think the key words there are "with the benefit of hindsight".

At the end of 1990, when Jean had a Williams contract but then also signed for Ferrari and had to choose between the two, look at how the past season had just gone for both teams. Ferrari had been championship challengers with Alain Prost and arguably should have won the title were it not for Senna's antics at Suzuka. Williams had only won two races - a somewhat fortuitous victory for Patrese at Imola and Thierry Boutsen doing his best Trulli-train impersonation in Hungary, getting to the front and staying there.

At the time, on form you would have had to go for Ferrari. It was not entirely foreseeable that internally Ferrari would start eating itself up in politics in 1991, whilst Williams would come on strong thanks to the Adrian Newey-designed FW14, ushering in a seven-year period where Williams was the dominant team.

Back on topic, who would I interview? A few different names come to mind, but someone who really intrigues me is B Bira, the prince of Siam.
I was born the day after HWNSNBM. Given time zone differences, we may have been born at the same time.

Definitely, the keywords there are "with the benefit of hindsight". But as I've mentioned some times, I am completely partial when it comes to Williams - and choosing to drive for the boys in red instead of the coolest team in the history of everything, ever counts as brain fade in my books. Was so in 1991, still would be today.

Yeah, I know. I'm talking about me there. I started watching F1 around the time of the FW14 and that sort of thing stays with you. I just follow Williams, they are what I look forward to seeing when the image comes on the screen. Don't even care that much about drivers to be honest.

I think Nannini may or may not have been at Ferrari for 91, but because of the accident he couldnt, therefore Alesi had the oppertunity, some people like Fisichella have jumped at the change, Alesi being another.
