The 2012 IndyCar Series thread

Postby JohnMLTX » 03 Feb 2011, 05:12

Drivers of note who are signed up to or expected to sign up to compete include:
Justin Wilson, F1 Reject
Takuma Sato, F1 Legend
Sebastien Bourdais
Charlie Kimball, A1GP Team USA driver

Bourdais may be replacing Milk and Donuts on the road courses this year. It's probably gonna be the most drastic change in drivers I've ever seen.

That's like replacing Yuji Ide with Kamui Kobayashi.

Yeah. It's looking to be a fantastic send off season for the Dallara.

Also of note is Simona de Silvestro, but moreso that she'll be driving for HVM... which was formerly Minardi Team USA, which is run by Keith Wiggins, he of Pacific fame!
Graham Rahal is the son of Bobby Rahal (F1 Reject, CART Legend), driving for Chip Ganassi...
Helio Castroneves I think tested for Toyota at one point...
Dario Franchitti looked to be F1-bound for Jaguar but he opted to stay with Team KOOL Green in CART instead. It was the right call if you ask me...
GP2 dropout Mike Conway is driving for Michael Andretti's Sinking Ship alongside Danica Patrick, Marco Andretti, and Ryan Hunter-Reay.
Paul Tracy is working on a deal with Conquest Racing... and I only mentioned The Thrill From West Hill because... well, Bourdais looks to be back...
Will Power... just the name.
Bertrand Baguette... ... says enough.
Ryan Briscoe, who I think went to school with one Jamie McGregor, if memory serves me right.

I've heard various rumors that Scott Speed was seeking an IRL drive, but I've also heard that he's chickened out of an IRL drive because it's "too dangerous".... would explain his cowardice in NASCAR and why Red Bull dropped him!
Check out the TM Master Cup Series on Youtube...
...or check out my random retro IndyCar clips.

I said no ffence taken. I have never had the chance to do so. So if it did happen, for the first time in around 20 years, I probably would have to laugh at the sudden absurity of how long it took.

Ok, some more developments:
The Honda Indy Edmonton is gonna have a pretty different track layout for next year. It's kind of a downer because the old track is gone, but the new layout looks pretty nice.
Also, in awesome news, Hideki Mutoh, former Japan F3, Formula Nippon, and Super GT driver is going back to japan to drive a Super GT Honda for none other than AGURI SUZUKI!!!
Fantastic!

I am disappoint. I miss having late night parties with friends where we'd play Halo while waiting for the race to STAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT. I mean, yeah, it was inconvenient staying up till 2 to watch the race, but American F1 fans have been doing that for years.

The same "international streaming inks" mentioned above apply for Indycar as well as for NASCAR.
Indycar also has an official stream (although sadly not the TV signal but good enough to follow what is going on) on indycarnation.indycar.com - registration is required, but membership and the stream are both free.

Spoiler Alert Below

Daytona Updates:

It's been a complete crashfest after Michael Waltrip (typically) caused two wrecks around 20% of the way in! He used a real BS excuse. Ambrose, Allmendinger, and Jeff Gordon were collected, along with longshot qualifier Brian Keselowski (other brother of Brad), who was propping up the timesheets for most of Speedweeks!

JPM and teammate Jamie McMurray are legitimate contenders for the race win, along with Brad Keselowski and Regan Smith (who I still think won that Talladega race in 2008), driving the only car in the field that was prepared outside of the state of North Carolina! Regan Smith's #78 car is from Denver, Colorado, which for the non-Americans is about halfway across the country.

Spoiler Alert Above

Trevor Bayne earned that one. WAAAAAAY too many cautions, but a good finish. In my opinion the truck race was better.

I thought you foreigners didn't like Nascar? It was too boring and unrefined...

It's not so much about the unrefined as it is about the boring - on some tracks (the Poconos and Fontanas of the world). And the races could all lose 100 miles and be no less interesting to watch. But apart from that, and of course I can only speak for the two countries I know well, Germany and Austria, there is i significant online community of people who like NASCAR and are also quite knowledgable about it. Sadly you have to find a video stream on the net as no TV station carries NASCAR here.

I can get behind the races being too long, most of the reason I don't watch a full season of Nascar racing is because I don't have the will to commit that much time to see it all. I think the inherent problem with oval racing is that there are too many yellow flags, and that the caution periods usually go on a lap or 2 too long (usually for reasons unrelated to the racing.) And some tracks I simply cannot stand (most of the mile and halfs, Richmond, Loudon, Homestead, Pocono) because they produce boring racing.

The best Nascar racing without a doubt is in the truck series. Catch that if you can.
