And Barrichello wins! Despite being clobbered with effectively two penalities, he still managed to win the race by over a lap. The two Renaults come 2nd and 3rd and for the first time this season Michael Schumacher DNF, meaning the gap between Renault and McLaren is now only 11 points.
The battle for 2nd was thrilling, Initially it was a 5 scrap between Wilson, Alonso, Alesi, Button and Schumacher in that order. Penalties knocked Wilson early on, but the pitlane is so short that after his drive through he emerged still in 2nd and even then set fastest lap, but a stop go penalty dropped him off the pack, with finally Panis unlapping himself causing Wilson to drop a lap. Button was on a 2 stop when the rest were on a 3 and because of the nature of Monza, cars were going faster after pitting as opposed to much slower as has been the norm, he eventually dropped off the Renaults and Schumacher. The 3 of them all took turns to lead the battle but eventually Alesi made a break and drove off to secure 2nd. Alonso and Schumacher looked set to battle, but as Trulli was a lap down, they both ended up pitting together, this meant Schumacher had to continue on and unlike Wilson, was unable to eek another lap and ran out of fuel.
Ryan Briscoe had another great start and was 7th early on, his one stop meant he was so slow the front 6 drove clean away in to the distance meaning he created a 2nd tier racce. Ultimatley this 2nd tier was won by Mark Webber, who was lucky to avoid an unusual incident. Webber was in 8th place and dueling Sato ahead and Monteiro behind him, as the trio came to lap Sutil, Sutil's suspension failed causing Sato and Monterio to spin off in avoidance, despite being between those cars Webber managed to emerge unscathed. Lucky git.
Raikkonen, Hakkinen and Trulli round out the point scores with Hungarian GP winner Massa a pointless 9th ahead of a disappointing Heidfeld.
Briscoes one stop strategy had clearly not worked, he was in 12th place when he span out of the race, though he was ahead of Massa and Heidfeld at the time.
In only the 2nd race of the year where both Ferraris finish, Wilson is 13th.... (The other was the 1-2 at Imola)
