Maki Engineering 1974-76

Postby Rocks with Salt » 01 Jul 2011, 08:09

I know I've already sent off a rough copy to the admins, but since I just finished writing an F1Rejects-length article about the obscurity that is Maki Engineering, I was wondering if I should be going through this process or if there's a different way this needs to be addressed. If anyone's interested, I can put the rough copy here, but I was hoping to run it by a professional fact-checker (a.k.a the admins) first. The only other flaw I seem to have with this is not finding a good deal of pictures for the F101, F101B/C, and the F102A, so I guess if anyone can help with that it would be most appreciated. So... thoughts?
...in bed.

Thanks heaps RWS - I have sent you an email.

In the meantime, yes, if anyone can help with further info or pictures for Maki, post it here and I can add it to the profile!

I must say that I'm looking forwards to reading more about Maki Engineering's foray into F1 - it seems that few remember that, in the gap between Honda withdrawing from Formula 1 in the 1960's and their return in the 1980's as an engine supplier, there were other Japanese companies who attempted to break into the F1 world.
I'll be quite interested to read the finished article - I guess that this might well be the first attempt anybody has made to write an extensive article about Maki, so it's definitely going to be pretty unique.

The prototype Maki didn't even conform to the rulebook. I don't think they realized there was a rulebook. The biggest crime was that it looked like a steam tub.
Check out Aerogi's site forum and you can almost swim in Maki's
personally i'm waiting for the Dywa story :D

At the Stavelot Abbey museum, there's a section dedicated to the Spa-Francorchamps circuit. They can only get the cars from private collectors, hence Johnny Claes' Talbot-Lago, an Arrows and a myriad of Makis and Kauhsens

I wonder if there are any other independent Japanese chassis builders these days, apart from Dome?

Just one more, called Kojima. Actually several of their staff came from Maki. They entered 2 cars called KE007 and KE009 in one GP each, the 1976 Japanese GP and the 1977 Japanese GP. They entered one driver, Masahiro Hasemi, in 76, finishing 11th while being credited the fastest lap. In 77 they entered 2 drivers, Noritake Takahara retired and Kazuyoshi Hoshino finished 11th.

It looked like this:

Interestingly, all Kojimas and Makis were designed by the same man: Masao Ono.

Not-so-epic bump to say that I haven't forgotten about the article that Rocks with Salt wrote.

I wanted to find an old edition of Motorsport that had several stories on the 1976 season, including one on the Japanese entries including Maki, to look at in conjunction with the article. I've been looking for a month or two around my home (which resembles a pig sty ... that's what happens when you have kids) and I can't find it anywhere. :(

I think it's the February 2001 edition. Would anyone by off-chance have a copy?

Don't have that one; (at least can't find it) :P But do have all 12 editions from 1976, if any info required?
