ROUND 4 - 1994 MONACO GRAND PRIX - Monte Carlo

QUALIFYING
Qualifying was plagued with torrential rain, went for the full wet tyres to start qualifying with. But I was nowhere. Halfway through the session, I was last, not setting a competitive time. Schumacher was 2 seconds quicker than the entire field, and 8 seconds faster than JJ Lehto. Then I made the inspired switch to monsoon tyres. The first lap I did was in the 1 minute 45 second range, 1 tenth slower than Schumacher, then I found more confidence on those tyres, and I scored my first ever pole position, by over 4 seconds. I was 12 seconds quicker than JJ Lehto and Eric Bernard on the last row.
"What an incredible feeling it is, especially after such a miserable start to the season for me, I honestly can't believe it!!! I know I wouldn't have been quickest in the dry, but this feeling is just simply unreal, I cannot believe it. 4.7 SECONDS, F*CK YEAH"

RACE
This was it, starting from the very front for the first time in my career. DNQing here last year as well. I made a poor start and lost out to Schumacher, Senna was immediately out of the race as he tapped Alesi and hit the barrier. Schumacher started pulling away at the rate of a few seconds a lap. The order was Schumacher, Christopherson, Berger, Alesi, Hakkinen and Morbidelli. About a quarter of the way through the race, Berger and I were involved in a collision with both of us out of the race. It was a 50/50 racing incident so no penalties would be given. JJ Lehto's season got worse with a transmission failure. Christian Fittipaldi was once again challenging for points until a puncture ruined his race, he rejoined in last place. Schumacher then suffered a water leak and retired after oblitterating the entire field throughout the race. The order was then Alesi, Hakkinen, Brundle, Morbidelli, Martini, Hill, Panis and Comas who was having a fine race for Larrousse until his back wheel clipped the barrier. Alesi looked to have the win, until his car began slowing with just a couple of laps to go, he couldn't hold off the two McLarens but he was at least able to hold on to 3rd place. Also, Olivier Panis passed Damon Hill for 6th on the last lap.

ROUND 5 - 1994 SPANISH GRAND PRIX - Barcelona

QUALIFYING
For the second race in 5, Lotus don't get a single car on the grid. The two Larrousse drivers get the last two spots on the grid. For the second time in 3 races, I qualified dead last, over half a second off 21st placed Fittipaldi. Schumacher took pole position ahead of Damon Hill and Rubens Barrichello. Senna qualified down in 10th, and Olivier Beretta impressed with 12th place and a chance of points. JJ Lehto also qualified in the top 6 and was looking for his first points of the season.

RACE
I made a good start and was up to 13th at the end of the first lap, even ahead of Senna who got away disasterously. At the start of the second lap, Senna, Panis and myself were involved in a collision, Panis had to retire. The two Benettons were both out early, Schumacher with an oil leak whilst in the lead, Lehto with an engine failure. Senna and I were at the back of the grid. Jean Alesi was the next retirement after spinning and hitting the unpopular temporary tyre barrier. Cars dropped out early on included Eric Bernard with a water leak to end Ligier's weekend, Frentzen and Irvine. Halfway through the race, the order was Hill, Barrichello, Brundle, Hakkinen, Blundell and Berger, until Brundle retired with an engine failure. This promoted Morbidelli to the points. Heartbreak occured for Barrichello, his Jordan broke down with 4 laps to go. Hakkinen then pulled off the track with a transmission problem. The two Larrousse cars were both running in the points, but whilst Hill won, could Beretta hold on to 6th place from a charging Senna. The answer, was yes!

ROUND 6 - 1994 CANADIAN GRAND PRIX - Montreal

QUALIFYING
It was back to normality in qualifying after two very unusual Saturdays for me, first then last. This time, I was right in the middle of the pack in 11th. Jean Alesi took a shock pole position in the Ferrari ahead of Michael Schumacher and Ayrton Senna. Mark Blundell struggled and ended up down in 18th, only ahead of the two Minardis, Herbert and Bernard. Erik Comas once again qualified in his Larrousse, maintaining his 100% record in 1994. The times were considerably slower than last year due to a new chicane being added for safety reasons.

It was a good qualifying session for me, although it's a shame Mark struggled with his car. I must say I don't like the new chicanes added despite making them safer, as they take away great overtaking opportunities, especially here. It doesn't feel like a year since I last scored points, but unfortunately it is. I'll be sure to break my duck this season tomorrow.

RACE
Senna got a fantastic start off the line to take an immediate lead, as did I. I was up to 7th by the end of the first lap, even challenging Mika Hakkinen for 6th. Johnny Herbert retired very early on, as did JJ Lehto once again, this time with a failure in his Ford powerplant. Lap 30, the order was Senna, Alesi, Schumacher, Berger, Hill and Christopherson. Hill then retired with a water leak. Things were looking good for me then in 5th place, just ahead of Eddie Irvine. On Lap 46, my engine gave up on the final straight before the last chicane of the lap, thus promoting Hakkinen into the points. Hakkinen then passed Irvine at the back hairpin on lap 53. 2 laps later, Berger plowed into Schumacher in the final chicane resulting in retirement for both of them. If it weren't for my engine blowup, i'd be 3rd at this point. Ayrton Senna then took his first victory of the season, and the second consecutive win for Williams. Martin Brundle and Karl Wendlinger rounded off the points.

ROUND 7 - 1994 FRENCH GRAND PRIX - Magny Cours

QUALIFYING
Qualifying was not bad for me, right in the middle of the pack. The front two rows were of the Noah's ark style, Williams, Williams, Benetton, Benetton. Hill got pole position ahead of Senna, Schumacher and Lehto. I almost caught the traffic in my best lap, but the drivers infront went into the pits, giving me a chance of a top 10 finish, which I achieved, just. For the first time this season, neither Larrousse car made the grid, Pedro Lamy in the second Lotus was starting his first ever Grand Prix in 20th, and even ahead of his teammate Johnny Herbert. The field was separated by about 3.5 seconds.

RACE
I made a decent start and held position, until the Adelaide hairpin, as Eddie Irvine managed to spin his car, he retired a couple of laps later from engine failure. Hill and Lehto got off the line poorly, Hill dropped from 1st to 3rd, Lehto dropped from 4th to 6th. Senna lead for the time being. I was slowly progressing up the field, until once again, my transmission gave up and my engine blew whilst in 7th place. I had completed 38 laps. My finishing record has been atrocious this year, but at least it hasn't been my fault the last 2 races. Jean Alesi then spun whilst in 4th place, onto the gravel and never to recover, it was the end of his race. He was quite far behind Senna, Schumacher and Hill, but looked certain for 4th place. The order towards the end of the race was Senna, Schumacher, Hill, Barrichello, Lehto and Berger. Berger put a move on JJ Lehto with 18 laps to go. Schumacher was putting the pressure on Senna, and with 14 laps to go, he moved down the inside of Senna to take the lead. Hill kept up with the other two, but remained in 3rd. Schumacher won the race, to take the lead in the championship. Ligier also got both cars home in their home race, with two French drivers, although no points were scored.

ROUND 8 - 1994 BRITISH GRAND PRIX - Silverstone

QUALIFYING
Once again, both Lotus cars made the grid, so Johnny Herbert will get to race in front of his home crowd. Once again, qualifying went badly for me, I can't seem to get to grips with Silverstone whilst on my qualifying run. Understeer was proving to be a bit of a problem. I was over 5 seconds off pole, and only qualified ahead of Eric Bernard. Senna struggled in qualifying, only 8th on the grid, with Damon Hill on pole, pleasing the British crowd. Mark Blundell was a creditable 9th in the other Tyrrell.

RACE
I made a good start and found myself jumping up to 15th by the end of the first lap. Senna was out on the second lap with an engine failure, giving Schumacher and Hill chances to capitalise for their own benefits in the championship chase. Michael Schumacher retired quite early on, 13 laps in the race. I passed Lamy on lap 17 using an engine failure of JJ Lehto to catch him off guard. Hill then comfortably lead from Berger, Barrichello, Brundle, Alesi, Irvine, Hakkinen and Blundell. Heinz-Harald Frentzen was another casualty, from an accident of his down. On Lap 44, Mark Blundell passed Mika Hakkinen for 7th. The race was then fairly uneventful, until Hill spun off the track towards the end of Lap 51 to hand Berger the lead, who would then win the race to take his first victory of the season. I also managed to score my best result of the season, albeit still not in the points.

It's so good to be back home, in front of the British crowd. They've been fantastic all throughout the weekend, and I feel bad in being unable to deliver a points finish. At least i've been able to get a better result, and Mark has been able to notch up another point for us, unfortunately Jordan have jumped us in the standings thanks to their double points finish.

ROUND 9 - 1994 GERMAN GRAND PRIX - Hockenheim

PRE-RACE
It is rumoured that JJ Lehto might be leaving Benetton before the end of the season, scoring only 1 point all year thanks to pace, crashes and bad luck. The team have stated that they are looking for a new driver for 1995, Johnny Herbert looks like the favourite, and may join the team early. Alessandro Zanardi will rejoin Lotus if this is the case.

QUALIFYING
I love this track, I seriously do. Unfortunately, qualifying didn't go quite as well as expected. I was very quick, but could not quite string a full lap together, but I still managed 14th, albeit 4 places behind Mark Blundell. Michael Schumacher scored pole position infront of his adoring fans. The Ferraris were very quick though, Alesi only 0.015 seconds behind Schumacher and Berger only a couple of tenths further behind. Senna struggled once again whilst Damon Hill grabbed fourth on the grid. Hopefully my progressions up the field can result in points this time around.

RACE
I made a good start and leaped up to 10th by the first corner, and up to 9th by the end of the lap, passing Frentzen. Berger made the best start and jumped into the lead by the end of the lap, pressuring the battling Schumacher and Alesi. A few laps later, a horrific accident happened to Rubens Barrichello, banging wheels with Frentzen, launching into the air and barrel rolling four times. Frentzen will not be punished for the incident as he was not deemed to have caused it. Christian Fittipaldi was next out of the race with his Ford-powered Footwork gave up. Hill was up to 3rd after Alesi had a poor first lap, he then made a move on Schumacher to promote himself to 2nd. The top 5 drivers were the 5 drivers seen to be battling for the championship, Berger, Hill, Schumacher, Alesi and Senna. Halfway through the race, I was up to 8th, just ahead of Blundell, Frentzen and Wendlinger. JJ Lehto was once again out of the race before the end after a puncture. Blundell also suffered a puncture. I made an overtake on Martin Brundle in the McLaren for 7th place. With 12 laps to go, I was not catching Hakkinen who was in 6th, but he spun off the track and crashed, giving me 6th position. Schumacher lost out to both Alesi and Senna in the pits, but was able to pass Senna towards the end of the race. For the second consecutive race, Gerhard Berger took the chequered flag and became a legitimate championship contender, and more importantly I held off Martin Brundle to score my first point of the season.

WOOHOO! YES!!! Finally a bit of luck for me, as soon as I went into turn 1 on that lap and I saw the McLaren I thought, this is surely it now. Although towards the end, I was just expecting something to go wrong, but it didn't, and my perseverance finally paid off. Surely there will be more to come now.

ROUND 10 - 1994 HUNGARIAN GRAND PRIX - Hungaroring

PRE-RACE
After Rubens Barrichello was injured, Jordan needed a replacement driver. This meant a veteran, and former driver for the Irish team was given one last chance in F1. Andrea De Cesaris was returning to the F1 scene for one last bite of the cherry.

It's great to see Andrea back in Formula 1 after being teammates with him for the first two races of 1992 and the entire 1993 season. I'm not particularly praying for him to score points, as we are also trying to secure 5th in the constructors, and Jordan and Sauber are our biggest obstacles.

QUALIFYING
I don't particularly like twisty circuits like this, although it is an interesting challenge. It's not as bad as Catalunya for me which is as dull as dishwater, or Aida which is a glorified karting track. Johnny Herbert's potential last race for Lotus was a disaster, as he did not qualify. Qualifying went spectacularly for me, as despite a few spins due to being ragged, I qualified in 3rd place, and was 2nd on the grid for a while behind Damon Hill. Michael Schumacher was the other driver who qualified ahead of me. Mark Blundell completed a great weekend for Tyrrell with 5th spot. Senna had a disaster with 8th whilst Jordan were very competitive, Eddie Irvine was 4th on the grid whilst Andrea de Cesaris made a spectacular return to F1 with 7th on the grid, ahead of Senna. Schumacher's time was enough to give him pole position.

RACE
My start wasn't poor, but it wasn't good enough to keep Irvine by the time we reached turn 1. Schumacher remained ahead of Hill whilst I was under pressure from Blundell. Panis had qualified 10th but was shunted out of the race by Michele Alboreto. Unfortunately on lap 2, I was over eager going into turn 10 trying to pass Irvine on the outside, and carried way too much speed, resulting in a retirement. Schumacher slowly built a lead in the early laps of the race, and Damon Hill could not quite respond. Eventually Hill retired with transmission problems. Senna made it a double DNF with a spin into the barrier. Schumacher was leading with Irvine in a spectacular 2nd and Mark Blundell 3rd. Mika Hakkinen and JJ Lehto spun off at the same corner later on in the race, with Lehto hitting the wall, and Hakkinen recovering, albeit in last place. Schumacher had a fairly comfortable lead but on lap 75 out of 77, he got a left front puncture, and had to pit. Schumacher rejoined in 7th behind Jean Alesi, and Eddie Irvine took the lead in the Jordan and kept it until the end of the race to take a surprise victory in his Jordan. Mark Blundell took 2nd place withstanding pressure from former teammate Martin Brundle whilst Jean Alesi held off Schumacher for a point. Despite being outshined by teammate Irvine, Andrea De Cesaris took home 2 points in his return to Formula 1.

ROUND 11 - 1994 BELGIAN GRAND PRIX - Spa Francorchamps

PRE-RACE
Johnny Herbert had been drafted into Benetton to replace the sacked JJ Lehto, Alessandro Zanardi returned to driving the Lotus after taking on testing duties. Bernard had signed for Larrousse, despite their reported financial troubles, Martin Brundle will return to Ligier to partner Olivier Panis, whilst both Tyrrell drivers are in the frame for the second McLaren drive. Meanwhile, Ayrton Senna announced that he would retire as soon as he is no longer able to win the championship. David Coulthard will be his replacement, so as it stands, it looks like he could be waiting until 1995 to debut, but could enter a couple of Grands Prix in 1994.

It's not that I no longer want to compete, or I would retire immediately. I just don't feel like I have a driver to compete against like I did with Alain Prost, I will never race against another driver like him, although Schumacher, Hill and Alesi are all top drivers.

QUALIFYING
Qualifying went reasonably well, although the redesigned Eau Rouge did me no favours at all. 13th was the best I could do, which was only 2 places ahead of David Brabham in the Simtek. Martini scored an excellent front row start alongside Ayrton Senna. Johnny Herbert started 6th on his return to Benetton whilst Mark Blundell qualified an excellent 7th in the other Tyrrell. The times were somewhat a lottery though as the session started off damp and dried up. The Jordans had a disaster, De Cesaris 20th and last-time's winner Irvine 21st, only ahead of Christian Fittipaldi.

RACE
I made a lightning start and was up to 4th after being brave and outbraking Hill and co at La Source. Martini temporarily took the lead, and up to Les Combes on lap 1, the order was Martini, Senna, Schumacher, Christopherson, Hill, Alesi, Herbert and Blundell. Martini dropped back quickly to 4th, I was down to 5th after Hill instantly repassed me. Martini dropped out early on with clutch failure. Johnny Herbert was the next to drop out and Mika Hakkinen dropped to last after having to pit after hitting the barrier and losing his front wing. I was holding on to 4th, but had no chance of catching Senna, Schumacher or Hill without anything happening. Meanwhile, further back, Brabham dropped to last purely due to having a slower car. Zanardi passed Alboreto around the outside for 16th place early on. The race was not very eventful as Senna crossed the line for another victory to add to his already impressive resume, Schumacher and Hill rounded off the podium whilst Tyrrell scored their first double points finish for a very long time.

ROUND 12 - 1994 ITALIAN GRAND PRIX - Monza

PRE-RACE
Lotus have announced that 1994 will see the end of them competing in Formula 1. The team have been competing since 1958 and are one of the most successful and legendary teams in the history of the sport.

QUALIFYING
Lotus had brought upgrades for the 109 car in an attempt to leave Formula 1 in style. The upgrades look like they may have worked. Pedro Lamy qualified in the top 6 and proved that if given a chance, a driver will be able to show what he is capable of. Gerhard Berger pleased the tifosi with pole position whilst Tyrrell had a disasterous qualifying session. Mark Blundell was 20th whilst I was slowest of all, not being able to attack the chicanes properly. Michael Schumacher only managed 5th on the grid whilst Johnny Herbert did not even make the top 10. Zanardi was 8th in the second Lotus which leaves people thinking, what could Herbert have done if he was still in a Lotus.

RACE
This was the perfect opportunity for Berger to retake the championship lead, he made a good enough start, although Hill and Senna were right on his tail. I made a few places at the start, although Zanardi was nudged by Wendlinger, and Blundell and Zanardi came to contact. End of their races. Berger kept the lead for the first 15 laps or so, until the first round of stops, both Hill and Senna jumped him. Senna only just beat Berger down the straight though. Damon Hill managed to build a big gap at the front, and despite being an outsider for the championship, with Alesi, he was not giving up. Michael Schumacher spun early on and had to try and fight back. Halfway through the race, the order was Hill, Senna, Berger, Alesi, Herbert and Lamy. Pedro Lamy was under pressure from Mika Hakkinen until he had a water leak. I was chasing Morbidelli, until Bernard's engine failed and he was holding Morbidelli up, allowing me to get a run going into the first chicanes. A bad pit stop dropped Frentzen from 7th to 8th, Frentzen could have passed Lamy with a bit of luck beforehand. On the last couple of laps, Panis and myself had a great scrap, although for 12th place. Damon Hill staked his claim for the championship, with an incredible win, showing everyone that he can beat Senna.

ROUND 13 - 1994 PORTUGUESE GRAND PRIX - Estoril

QUALIFYING
Larrousse's Erik Comas made the grid for the first time in a long time, the French team were struggling for finances and needed more results, to prevent dropping out of Formula 1 in the way Lotus did. Lotus are confirmed to be exiting Formula 1 after the Australian Grand Prix but Larrousse have intentions of continuing in 1995. Lamy was Lotus's representative for Estoril, but their Italy performance seemed to be a one-off. Qualifying was not great for me, as I only managed 16th, although the field was relatively close, apart from Comas who was well over a second slower than the entire field in his Larrousse. Mark Blundell managed 12th whilst Benetton struggled massively. Schumacher qualified 10th whilst Johnny Herbert was down in 18th. Senna was not able to take full advantage, and did not manage his usual pole or front row start. Pole went to Damon Hill alongside Gerhard Berger.

RACE
Senna got a lightning start from 4th on the grid to lead into turn 1, whilst Hakkinen dropped behind Senna and Alesi. The two Williams were followed by the two Ferraris. Unfortunately at the start, Martini locked his brakes, and I was in the wrong place, causing us both to retire. Johnny Herbert was another early retirement with a water leak whilst Schumacher only lasted 14 laps with an engine failure. Senna was leading by about 5 seconds until his Renault engine burst into flames. Mika Hakkinen was running quite well, until a collision with Panis, after trying to rejoin the track after a spin. Martin Brundle also ran well until an oil leak. Berger was dropping back through the field after starting 2nd, he then suffered a puncture near the start of lap 49. Damon Hill was extending a comfortable lead, to help his championship challenge. It was made even better after Jordan substitute Andrea De Cesaris passed Jean Alesi for 2nd. The two Footwork cars were running 4th and 5th for a while, Morbidelli ahead of Fittipaldi, although Morbidelli was yet to pit. Only half the field finished, but Damon Hill was the one to take the chequered flag and also the championship lead.

ROUND 14 - 1994 EUROPEAN GRAND PRIX - Jerez

PRE-RACE
Minardi driver Michele Alboreto has announced he will step down from Minardi before 1995, he hasn't ruled out retiring with a race or two to go. Luca Badoer has signed a contract as the second Minardi driver for 1995. Meanwhile Rubens Barrichello is recovering well, and will return for 1995 alongside Eddie Irvine.

It's been great to be given another chance to race in Formula 1, although I chose not to chase a seat for 1994 in the first place. Either way, it's been great driving for Jordan again as the team made me feel very welcome. However, I am retiring for good after Adelaide. Hopefully I can get rid of my record for most races without a win.

QUALIFYING
Despite it being a dry qualifying, the grid was very shook up. Schumacher was back on form, as he snagged pole position once again, Ligier were a lot quicker than they have generally been this season, whilst the star of the session was Gianni Morbidelli in the Footwork, who scored his first ever front row start. I was quicker than Blundell as I qualified 10th, just behind the two Williams, and just ahead of Eric Bernard in the Ligier. Schumacher was looking good to get back in the championship, as the top 6 were Schumacher, Morbidelli, De Cesaris, Panis, Hakkinen and Irvine. Christian Fittipaldi was a deadbeat teammate as he was only 20th, just ahead of the 2 Lotus.

RACE
At the start, Schumacher got away very well and pulled away whilst Morbidelli got away slowly and dropped to 4th. Panis got an amazing start and moved up to 2nd. Schumacher surged away in the first lap, whilst Panis pulled away from the rest of the grid as well. I moved up to 7th at the start and after a spin from Hakkinen, that became 6th. Unfortunately, electrical problems put pay to a great chance of points, story of my season. Gerhard Berger and Andrea De Cesaris were involved in a collision, Berger lost his front wing, whilst De Cesaris's chances of consecutive podiums was shot down. Michele Alboreto was the next retirement, with electrical problems like me. Damon Hill was running 3rd after passing Gianni Morbidelli who repassed Irvine in the pitstops. Eddie Irvine then retired with a fuel leak. Karl Wendlinger was under pressure to perform to keep his seat for 1995, he silenced his critics with a spectacular pass on Johnny Herbert, at the Curva Dry Sac, with virtually no room. Schumacher maintained a comfortable lead and carried on until the end of the race. Unfortunately heartbreak was around the corner, on the straight starting his penultimate lap, Panis's Renault engine inside his Ligier gave up on him, and cost him a sure 2nd place and 6 points. He was devastated. This promoted Hill to 2nd, to help his championship chances. Schumacher won the race to keep his championship hopes alive. Sauber were off the pace in qualifying, but kept out of trouble to score 5 points and stay ahead of Footwork, despite Morbidelli's podium.

ROUND 15 - 1994 JAPANESE GRAND PRIX - Suzuka

PRE-RACE
Michele Alboreto has announced his retirement to be effective immediately. The 1985 championship runner up stated that he would rather not waste his time on machinery uncapable to give him results, as he has only scored points in one out of the last 5 seasons, at Footwork in 1992. Luca Badoer will fill in for the final 2 races, as they want him to acclimatise himself at Minardi, after being given the drive alongside Martini for 1995. If Senna is beaten by his teammate, he will lose any chance of the title, and retire immediately, meaning that we could see David Coulthard in the car at Adelaide. Damon Hill will be World Champion if he wins the race.

QUALIFYING
Qualifying was horrible for me, in my only "flying" lap, I spun my car in Degner 2 and left it too late for a second flyer. Despite that, the car was not stable enough for me to enter the curves at the start properly. McLaren-bound Mark Blundell fared much better, just making the top half of the grid amongst the Saubers and just ahead of the Footworks. Luca Badoer was 20th fastest, so I would have only been around the Ligiers and Minardis anyway. 4 tenths ahead of Comas but over a second slower than Zanardi and co. Schumacher kept his championship hopes alive with pole position with Damon Hill in 4th. If the race positions stay the same, the gap will be reduced to one point. Alesi was spirited with 2nd but his and Berger's hopes were virtually over anyway. The Austrian only qualified 8th whilst Senna was 5th on the Saturday. Irvine was 3rd in a great effort.

RACE
My start was reasonably good, I got ahead of Badoer and Comas. Schumacher and Alesi got away like normal, the only change near the front was Hill getting ahead of Irvine at the start. I made a few overtakes in the first few laps: Comas and Bernard. On lap 13, Martin Brundle and Gianni Morbidelli collided and both needed front wings. They both continued in the race. The first retirement was the matured Andrea De Cesaris after running wide into turn 1 on the 23rd lap. 6 laps later on lap 29, one man's championship hopes completely ended, Ayrton Senna's engine gave up and he parked up at Degner 1. The Japanese fans showed utmost respect, after he brought Honda many victories in his time at McLaren. A sad way to bow out, and the driver will be missed in Formula 1. The gap between Hill and Schumacher would be 2 points, Jean Alesi went off at Spoon Curve from 2nd and dropped down to 14th. The gap is up to 4 points in Hill's favour. Eric Bernard had an engine failure in his Ligier and pulled off, although he didn't look like scoring points anyway. The race had a very low attrition rate, although 5 laps from the end, Damon Hill's Renault engine in his Williams gave up on him. Schumacher then cruised to a comfortable victory in his Benetton to take the championship lead. They think it's all over, it's not yet. Despite both drivers failing to finish, Williams still wrapped up the Constructors Championship, although it will be no consolation for the two drivers.

ROUND 16 - 1994 AUSTRALIAN GRAND PRIX - Adelaide

PRE-RACE
The major news was always going to be Ayrton Senna's immediate retirement from the sport, and David Coulthard's debut in the Williams. His job was primarily going to be to aid teammate Hill's championship challenge. Meanwhile, Tyrrell have found replacements for outgoing Christopherson and Blundell, they are Larrousse driver from 1992, Ukyo Katayama, and contender for Lotus drive, and Finnish rookie Mika Salo. Christopherson has confirmed he has signed a contract for 1995, but will not reveal until after the race. He was in talks with Jordan, Footwork and Sauber, although all the signs seem to point towards Footwork. Also, despite signing the agreement for 1995, doubts are looming over whether Larrousse will continue in Formula 1, which will reduce the grid to 13 teams with Forti Corse entering Formula 1. Pedro Diniz has signed for the newcomers, bring in substantial sponsorship from dairy giants Parmalat.

QUALIFYING
Lotus were looking to leave Formula 1 in style, and they have a good start, as they have both of their cars on the grid, beating Larrousse, Simtek and Pacific. It was a wet qualifying to settle the grid spots for the championship decider. Could this mix things up? Yes, but the two contenders still locked out the front row. Damon Hill crucially qualifying on pole ahead of Schumacher. Due to there being a 4 point gap between 1st and 2nd for each race may mean that the 2 point gap between Schumacher and Hill is irrelevant. Hill was almost a second quicker than his rival, who himself was almost a second quicker than 3rd placed Jean Alesi. Coulthard was 5th on his debut and De Cesaris was 4th in his final ever race in Formula 1. I was 15th on the grid whilst Mark Blundell was 12th, in our final races for Tyrrell whilst the two Lotus were 19th and 22nd. Zanardi beating Lamy.

RACE
The championship decider got underway, with Hill making a slightly better start than Schumacher, in order to maintain his lead in the race. My race did not last long at all, I jumped to 12th in the first corner, but a couple of turns before Brabham straight on the first lap, I misjudged the braking point, and retired from the race immediately. The only other early retirement was Mika Hakkinen who's Peugeot engine expired early on. Schumacher pressured Hill in the early laps, and Alesi could not be shook off by them. On lap 29, Schumacher made his move on hill after getting better drive onto Brabham Straight. Schumacher could not pull away, but built a gap of about 5 seconds. On lap 40, roughly halfway through the race, Alesi went for an overtake on Hill, but resulted in both of them going into the barrier and retiring. Schumacher was now the 1994 World Champion. Gerhard Berger had a loose wheel and had to pit. Martin Brundle passed Andrea De Cesaris for 3rd place. Eric Bernard was in 7th for his final race at Ligier, until his transmission failed. He was some 40 seconds from Johnny Herbert in 6th place. He didn't even need to finish the race, but Michael Schumacher won the 1994 Australian Grand Prix. Gone virtually unnoticed, David Coulthard came home 2nd on his debut.
