Next podcast - need your help!

Postby Kuwashima » 22 Dec 2011, 22:16

Dear all,

Despite popular demand to the contrary, we will be dusting off the microphone next Monday evening Australian time (Boxing Day) to record our Season Review and Xmas Edition! We have our one-word reviews ready and raring to go, but need your help with content for the penultimate segment of the show!

We're looking for semi-serious F1 and reject related topics to debate. We'll each take a side and then have 1 minute only to ramble and pontificate. For example:

That Lewis Hamilton fans are more pathetic than James Allen fans.
That Yuji Ide would have done a better job than Karun Chandhok in Germany.
That the days of the F1 Rejects are over.
That Herman Tilke could have improved the Caesar's Palace Car Park track design.

Post your ideas below and we'll select the top 3 or 4 topics and go our hardest.

Thanks in advance...

Cheers,
Jamie and Enoch

Are you wanting us to post the ideas on here or email you? I reckon it's a cracking idea.

And the idea that F1 Rejects is over is a bit of a one-sided debate, don't you think?

I have one:

Discuss the following statement -

The F1RWRS is better than Formula One. :P

Well, if it is in that mould, how about:

1- That HWNSNBM would have been champion this year if he drove Sebastian Vettel's car.
2- That Bernie's biggest love is not money.
3- That HRT is the new Andrea Moda.
4- Why Maria de Villota deserves a chance in F1.
5- That F1 Rejects is stronger than ever with almost half the field being rejects.
6- That talented pay-drivers are pay-drivers anyway and still impersonate the F1 Reject soul.
7- That Lewis Hamilton has a secret crush on Felipe Massa.
8- That Formula 1 will miss Colin Kolles.
9- How Marussia lost its virginity.
10- That F1 Rejects podcast are more popular than Sebastian Buemi.

EDIT:

11- That despite Nick Heidfeld being slightly boring, he is still missed.
12- That Luiz Razia is the biggest F1 Reject prospect since Yuji Ide.

Also:

That Nick Wirth really isn't to blame for Virgin's/Marussia's misfortunes
That driver choices have become more and more hilarious in recent years

I am still to be convinced although I am willing to see him have a decent chance (like, in a decent team, from the start of the season). Anyway it is less serious if we discuss that he is actually worthy, given his last performances...

I want some opinions on who's going to take the 2014 title, whether Prospec really are past the point of no return now they've signed a paydriver, whether Phoenix McAllister should just call it a day and save himself the grief, and why Foxdale even bother trying to make educated decisions on their chassis and engine when they'd be better off blindfolding themselves and pulling a combination out of a hat? :P

Some points to argue about:
Whether or not any of these drivers deserve some seats:
Nick Heidfeld
Kimi Raikkonen
Rrrmmmnnn Grrrrjjjnn
Pastor Maldonado

Whether or not Michael Schumacher will win a race again

Who is better: Perez or Kobayashi

Who did NOT deserve to get sacked out of the drivers sacked during this off-season

Who does need to be sacked but doesn't

Whether HRT, Maurssia or Caterham will score points in 2012

Whether or not Williams will bite the dust or not

Is Formula 1 too serious and professional? Where the days of attrition races and various failures are long gone, along with general ineptitude, does this make F1 too bland? Is being professional a good thing? (e.g less "timewasters")

You know, there may be something in that - Jackie Stewart did once comment that he felt that Bernie was more strongly motivated by the cut and thrust of organising a deal and pulling off what was thought to be impossible (a race in India, for example). The lure of the cash was there, certainly, but it was as much about winning admiration and respect as much as becoming as rich as Croesus.

Phoenix wrote:What about discussing Kimi Räikkönen's prospects for next season? I'm surprised no-one has brought that up yet. And, how do you guys reckon Red Bull will be able to preserve this year's dominance, or not, with the exhaust-blown diffuser being banned for next year?

Personally, I'm expecting Red Bull to still be quite competitive - the RB5, which was designed without a DDD (albeit with the exhausts blowing across the top of the diffuser), was very competitive, and with the rules remaining reasonably static the advantage lies with them.
Ferrari may yet spring a surprise, though, given their technical reshuffle; the F150th was still competitive at aero dependent tracks (think of Alonso's strong performance at Suzuka, for example) despite having difficulties with their blown diffuser, so they are the most likely to benefit from the rule changes. McLaren, too, will most likely benefit from a change in the rules that erodes Red Bull's current advantage - whether they can capitalise on that with the departure of Iley is another matter. Still, with Button in very strong form and brimming with confidence right now, Hamilton rebuilding his confidence and Alonso as strong as ever, I think that Vettel might find 2012 a little harder than 2011 was, though he will still remain the favourite.

As for Kimi, well, given the cutbacks in pre-season testing I'd expect him to possibly struggle a little in the early parts of the season, which is what both he and the team expect will happen. If the car is competitive out of the box, and remains so throughout the season, then there is a chance that Kimi may begin building back up to his better form; if the car is not competitive, or the teams falls back down the grid as it did this year, I can see Kimi losing both interest and speed as the year goes on.

Anyway, how about some more talking points - is Red Bull's treatment of Toro Rosso, where that team effectively competes for the benefit of Red Bull, anti-competitive and detrimental for the sport?
Similarly, is the interference of the larger teams (Red Bull, Ferrari etc.) in the driver management of their partners and smaller teams (Sauber, Toro Rosso, HRT) by placing drivers of their choice in those teams beneficial or not for the sport?

JYS did indeed say that & reiterated it in the recent Motor Sport podcast which I posted about in the SKY TV thread on 12th Dec. Discussing Bernie is probably a spent subject now. Love him or hate him the way he holds this thing together is phenomenal.

Anyway, topic. If Kubica were recovered & fit would Ferrari have signed him to replace Felipe?

This came up in the Motor Sport season review podcast but no real discussion was entered into & no conclusion drawn other than the person raising the question being convinced it would have happened.

Anyway, topic. If Kubica were recovered & fit would Ferrari have signed him to replace Felipe?

This came up in the Motor Sport season review podcast but no real discussion was entered into & no conclusion drawn other than the person raising the question being convinced it would have happened.

It's true that it would be hard to find somebody else who could dominate the sport in the way that he effectively has for so long, and I guess that is part of the fascination people have for him (given that he has used every trick in the book in the process). To me, that does seem like an incredibly powerful motivating force, but I guess that may be a discussion for another day.

As for your question, I do think that if Kubica was fully fit and able to perform as he used to Massa could well have ended up losing out to Kubica. After all, had BMW Sauber not held onto Kubica so tightly back in 2009 Kubica would have already replaced Massa - not to mention the fact that relations between him and Boullier have deteriorated as rumours that Ferrari already have an option for Kubica have increased.
However, given that Ferrari are normally a little conservative when choosing their drivers, I expect that they would only hire Kubica when they had a rock solid guarantee that he was both fully fit and able to perform. That probably explains why Boullier now seems more cautious about giving Kubica the opportunity to test, since he probably fears or suspects that Ferrari want somebody else to take the risk of letting Kubica test, just in case Kubica cannot perform as he used to.

This a thread for suggesting things to discuss in the podcast. Not really for entering into discussion.

Sorry - I guess that it's become such a routine habit of mine that it was my instinctive response.
