So, when are they launching Romain Grosjean’s Lotus, then?

Grosjean will probably get Kovalainen's Lotus (from last year) knowing them...

Well, we know for definite that Kimi will be getting a test drive in the R30 tomorrow (Renault have scheduled a two day test for Kimi at Valencia on the 23rd and 24th), so if anybody is getting a taste for older machinery it'll be Kimi.
Speaking of which, does anybody know what chassis designation their 2012 car will be? I assume that they might be dropping the "R" designation because of its association with Renault (I wonder whether VW would kick up a fuss if they used R32 as a chassis number, given that VW uses that same mark on certain versions of the Golf), but would they revert to the "T" designation that the original Team Lotus used? If they did, it might be a little awkward given that Fernandes also used the "T" designation - continuing on from T128 might give some implicit acknowledgement of Fernandes's right to the name, but re-using the same numbers could cause some confusion as well...

I see the usual optimistic hype from Ferrari.

I miss the old days when Ferrari always stated their intention to win the championship next year. Went on for years that did.

Perhaps they'll undertake the old Team Lotus' nomenclature? I doubt so (apart from the fact it would be quite a display of hubris). Maybe we could something like LGP-1 or LGP-01?

It might look like hubris, but on the other hand given how Group Lotus have been associating themselves with the historic Team Lotus (adopting the old livery, highlighting the association with Renault and the use of the old Lotus facilities etc.) it would not be entirely surprising if they did try to link their car into the existing numbering system that Team Lotus used in the past.
After all, when they launched their track car the internal numerical designation was the Lotus 125, which followed on with the numerical system that Group Lotus has used in the past; perhaps they might designate their proposed road car projects as the Lotus 126 to 130 and call the upcoming car the Lotus 131 (with the T designation reserved for post 2014 when the turbo engines come in).

That's funny - the original article from Autosport said that the photos would be published tomorrow, not today. Still, it might well be a good idea to start posting the pictures so the members here can stave off the effects of F1 Deprivation for a while...

On another note, whilst HRT have been given a fair amount of criticism in recent weeks for being behind schedule, poor management and so forth, Marussia have quietly let it be known that they are now withdrawing from the first test session. It seems that development of the MR-01, as it is to be known, has fallen behind schedule (they are only just beginning to carry out wind tunnel tests now because they struck the deal with McLaren to use their wind tunnel relatively late last year), which means the car will not be launched until the final test session.
The team are still planning on giving Pic some time in the 2011 car to gain experience, plus to gather data on how the new tyres perform; that is now scheduled to take place in Barcelona. http://www.f1technical.net/news/16992?s ... 53c90a9630

Re: 2012 Car Launches thread

Here is a side view of the car that shows where the exhausts have been positioned:
Image

I have to agree with others here that the nose of the car looks really awkward; the sharp kink in the nose line makes it look as if it is a piece from another car that has been wedged into place. It's a shame because the rest of the car looks like it is neatly packaged, but it's kind of hard to look past the front...

The other thing is that most observers think that this is the template for what most of the car will look like next season (it is probably why Domenicali described the Ferrari 663* as "ugly"); at least McLaren were using a relatively low nose last year (it was below the limits on nose tip and the limit on the height of the front monocoque in place this year), so it is possible that McLaren might be the one of the few teams this year with a relatively normal looking nose...

*[N.B. I'm using the internal numbering system that Ferrari uses for their projects right now since Ferrari haven't confirmed what the car will officially be called].

I think that what really kills the CT-01 is the way that the platypus nose is flat. I saw this picture posted over at Autosport, which shows how many of the other cars would look like with the angled nose, and they're not nearly as bad:

Image

And if that's what they're going to look like, then they all remind me of the Virgin VR-01:

Image

So maybe it's not going to be as bad as first thought. Maybe Caterham are the only ones who have beaten their car with an ugly stick.

Pat Symonds said, on the latest Motor Sport podcast that there are likely to be a number of cars with a pronounced step in the nose following the lowering of the nose height regs. whilst maintaining the bulkhead dimensions.

The nose of that Caterham looks like it's been in a fight. Possibly against a Group Bahar vehicle? 8-) And HWNSNBM help us if most of the rest of the field adopt such a kinked nose. The Virgin nosecone looks pretty simple and neat.

Exactly - although there are still some very pronounced ridges on the MVR-01, the transition between those ridges and the rest of the nose is relatively smooth and consistent, whereas this is a relatively sharp transition.
It's kind of inevitable, though, that the cars would look something like this - the FIA defined how high the bulkhead could be, and how high the tip of the nose could be, but not the sections in between those points. OK, the noses are being lowered for pragmatic reasons - the idea is to bring them below the axle line so cars don't tend to ride up over the other car in a collision - but because the FIA wants a high front bulkhead for crash protection, this is the net result. It is also a side effect of the ban on blown diffusers too - the teams want to keep the nose as high as possible overall because it improves airflow underneath the car and under the floor.

Well the Caterham shows they have at least not just updated the old package, so that's got to be good for the sport in that a small manufacturer has not just continuously updated the same chassis. With the nose, I think it is how steeply it rises that makes it look so ugly, it's almost liked they've put a step in the middle for the driver to use to get into the car!

The cars from 07 and 08 were the worst IMO. All those silly fins and random bits of wing stuck on the sides made it look awful. This years cars (The Caterham at least) look a lot cleaner and simpler around the bodywork. And that can only be a good thing.

As for the front wing, I've seen worse. Remember the benetton's from 2001 or the Williams wing from early 2004?

I quite like those front wings. I remember specially of thinking the Williams one was a cool and different one.

I can withstand some fins but not in excess. Those random bits of wing made the car look complex and, sometimes good looking. I see that we have antagonistic tastes. That probably means you like your women blonde, complex, tall and chubby. ;)
