Alert! An old spambot has activated itself!

The 1990s were better. Fact. And you bloody well know it.

This bot is seemingly going on a rampage. I wonder how it took 2 years and 2 months for it to finally start spamming?

Put that spambot on the gallows
He deserves to die
He spammed his way to infamy
By talking about drugs, communism and religion
And the witch couldn't make it make sense!

He did 6 successive spam posts, a crime above all others
So put the spammer on the gallows!

He doesn't deserve a trial!
He doesn't deserve to be allowed mercy!
He does deserve to die!

Let him rot, as an example to all!
Let the dogs rip out his wretched heart!
Veftlislentee, a name that will forever live in infamy!
It's a disgrace to the forum, and to HWNSBM

HE DESERVES TO DIE

7 spam threads in one night from that reactivated spambot. I look down the member list, and there's loads of spambot registrations. Could Veftlislentee have been the opening shot for the next flooding of spam threads from reactivated spambots? :? :?:

I wonder how he managed to do 7 in a row.

He needs to be banned before he strikes again. And before anyone other one does.

That was a fairly hefty bombardment that spam bot unleashed upon us - I think that I've got rid of all of the posts that it unleashed (for now at least).

I agree that, after a year proving themselves as Moderator Knights, both mario and Phoenix now should be graced with a promotion to Master Moderators learning a new power in the process: Ban spam bots.

No, at the moment neither Phoenix or I have that ability - we can delete posts by spam bots, but not the accounts themselves.

I have a strong suspicion that if that were to happen, and both Phoenix and I set to work, the number of members that this forum officially has might drop sharply (as I type the very latest member is another spam bot, and a quick flick through the member list suggests that there are a sizeable number of spam bots out there).

To be honest, that won't be any big deal - there are a great number of registered users who have never posted, and it would reduce the possibility of random spam. And how many genuine people really sign up but then never post?

I will be honest. I prefer a low member number but all of those real people than a high number with plenty of ready to engage on a SPAM spree bots. For a start I would suggest to delete only those who have a highly suspicious link in the signature (and 0 posts).

And, in the basis of that, I prefer things as they are right now. Deleting whatever spam that might appear is far better than having to deal with "suspicious" new members.

True, although there are some "members" that are transparent spam bots, either with links in their signatures that lead to all sorts of dodgy websites or have names like "dvdrippers" or "credit" (who are registered "members" of this forum and somewhat unlikely to be here just for their interest in motor sport...). I wouldn't mind having the option to target accounts like that, where the spam bot in question hasn't even bothered to hide its identity, or being able to prevent an existing spam bot from posting again (with Veftlislentee being top of the list there, I can tell you).

It looks like what is happening is a new spam bot is registering on the forum on a daily basis and promptly posting - I've just had to delete a post by a spam bot that had registered and promptly posted something.

[EDIT] The attacks are coming in on a very regular basis now, and with the same pattern - a new spam bot registers at relatively regular intervals, makes a single post and then falls silent. I can only assume that this is part of a co-ordinated spam attack on this site...

Whilst I'm hardly adverse to sim racing in itself and do occasionally take a look into the PMMR, it's just that generally I find it a little confusing to keep track of things in there. Wizzie's description, though, of "McCarthy land" almost makes it sound more like 1950's America when McCarthyism was in full swing (at least that was the phrase which came to mind for some reason).

Sounds to me like McCarthy seems have been the subject of some McCarthyism at Andrea Moda. :?

EDIT: This spambot is Indian. Viresh was Indian. Could this be the second coming of Viresh?

I had forgotten about Viresh, the only ever winner of the F1 Rejects Forum Spambot of the Year award.

Awards don't get more prestigious than that.

There's a reactivated spambot by the name of 'johnmax', that's currently online at this time. (8:35 AM BST). We should probably prepare ourself for a barrage of spam, Veftlistlentee style. :?
The 1990s were better. Fact. And you bloody well know it.

Murray Walker: There's a car coming into the pits now, they're so unreliable with all those electronics on board.
James Hunt: Actually, Murray, one of his wheels has just fallen off...

There are a few spambots that seem to activate themselves every now and then but, like the spambot named "johnmax", fall quiet again - sadly, though, the number of spambots registering on the forum is steadily increasing (the latest one is "mathmonkey" - the commercial links in his signature give the game away pretty clearly).
