Calling all music and history lovers...

Years and years ago I had a copy of the Offical 1998 season review on VHS (like I said, years and years ago). At the very end of the Belgium section, they did a quick 30-something second review of Jordan's highs and lows, finishing with their podium 1-2 at the Belgium race. In that segment was a piece of instrumental music being played which I loved but have never been able to find. I've spent hours on YouTube looking for it but to no avail.

Anyone out there know what it was called?

I know exactly what you mean, but I don't know either, sorry. There is so much obscure, catchy music on the old season reviews, particularly 1994 and 1995.

However I agree with Midgrid about there being some catchy tunes on some of the video's (glad i'm not the only one to have liked them). From memory the intro songs to most of the 80's / 90's video's were also great. I must admit they are guilty pleasures of mine, slightly cheesey 80's rock/ballads, stuff also like def leppard & talking heads & the wacky early songs of the 'chilly peppers...all of which does mix well when introduced to a heavy bass line.

The best way you will probably be able to get hold of them is to get yourself the relevant season review videos off ebay or wherever, and then purchase some software which will allow you to rip the video onto your computer, and then you can save the section of audio as an .mp3 or .wma or whatever you fancy.

I know you can do it with LPs because my dad's been at it for a while now with them, so I'm sure the software must be about for VHS too.

I always found the 91 intro pretty atmospheric, the video montage Duke cobbled together for that first minute or so was quite epic.

On a not entirely unrelated tack, I loathed and despised the 1993 commentary by Jonathan Ross. His ridiculous pronounciation of Meekhiyal Shoomarcher made my eyes twitch every time I heard it.

Not to mention his team-mate for that year, Wiccardo Patwese. Let's just hope Duke don't have the brilliant idea of employing former F1 drivers for the commentary on the 2012 season review, and Nick "vot do you mean you are all slightly bored?" Heidfeld makes an appearance.

I'd love to find out artists and titles to the intro music on the 1981, 1985, 1986, 1987 and 1991 year review videos. They're all awesome. Especially the 1991 tune which starts out rocky and ends atmospheric.

On the subject of the drivers doing the 1985 commentaries, I would LOVE them to do something similar again. Could you possibly imagine Lewis Hamilton doing Monaco 2011, there'd be expletives every other word!

All drivers should be banned from doing it. How many times can you fit "for sure" on a DVD commentary?

Thinking back, Tony Jardine was, arguably, even more annoying on the 1987 VHS (i think) with his borderline racist accents he used to describe incidents and his chummy nick-names for the drivers (calling Gerhard Berger 'cheese burger' is not amusing)

Also, on what planet is Peter Ustinov a good host for an F1 video? Those that have seen it know what I mean.

The best 80s ones were undoubtedly Clive James.

The 1983 commentary is TERRIBLE too - the content is pretty good but quite often the man's voice (Brian Kreisky) is drowned out by the noise of the cars which is sometimes FAR too loud and I have to mute that woman who sounds like Janice off Friends. It's a Formula 1 video, not a comedy!!!

I'm sorry, I can't help you on that one. From my best guess, I assume it was just music made specifically for the video, and not by any particular music artist.

Anyways I've seen some of the season reviews. My favorites are the ones with Clive James narrating. (1982, 1984, and 1986.) His dry sence of humor made it a must watch. He should have done all of them.

I think my favorite intro would have to be the one from the 1981 season review.

If you have a smartphone you can use SoundHound or a similar app. Basically you play the music, you put your phone near it and it will detect what song it is. This of course pertaining that the song is popular enough for them to have it in their database

He seemed to be a bit bewildered as to what he was actually doing standing next to the Berlin Wall, musing about Formula 1 taking a race to East Germany. And so... was... talking... very... slowly.

We need more like him. Much more. Clive James' commentary on those early 1980s season reviews (1982 springs immediately to mind) was always very amusing, and reminded me of the off-the-wall style of Simon Arron's Formula 3000 reports from Motoring News in the early 1990s. For example (and I have no idea if the two drivers actually retired this way, but they were competing in the 1993 season and were both F1 rejects):

M. Bartels..........32 laps......rammed from behind
V. Sospiri...........32 laps......tried to use Bartels as a brake

...this is as opposed to merely putting "collision" for both.

Sounds like the music on the original Colin McRae rally game. I think its the menu music.

I liked the music on the 1994 season review, The intro music on that review is the one they used on the first toca game. I asked Codemasters, they just replied with a generic "It was made in the studio, and the tapes are probably lost"

I replied with "How come it is on the 94 F1 season review which came out before your game?"

Via the pages of WTF1 I came across the Grauniad's advert for the 2007 F1 season. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is: name that tune. This has been bugging me since I first heard it on Scrapheap Challenge a year or so before this advert. So what is it?

IIRC there are two commentators for each video. One of them is Steve Rider but I don't know who the other one is.

Not even that, it might just be library music composed by one of the select companies that specialise in producing royalty-free music they sell on CD's for a high one-off fee. Still cheaper than licensing a real song...I have access to lots of Dance/House themed CDs like this, I don't know what it sounds like so can't check for you.

Haha surprisingly no, he was actually pretty quiet and subdued, he was getting some trainers for his daughter, and I was working on shoes at the time so I helped them out with that!
