F1 Nations Cup.

I have devised an alternate series for F1.It's basically seeing which country is the best over Formula One history.Only the top-scoring driver from each country counts to the championship.For example...

1.Italian driver-gets 1st place points
2.French-gets second place points
3.French-does not get third place points as there is already another driver of the same nationality ahead of him.
4.German-gets third place points

etc....

This is to avoid a country with many drivers entering a race to score a lot of points.Also,the Indy 500 will be discounted as the drivers are predominately American.

I have already finished the 1950 season.Here are the results.

1950 Season(using 9-6-4-3-2 points with 1 point for fastest lap)

Season Summary

The Italians would take the first season by storm,winning 3 times and taking second for the other 3 races.They can thank Giuseppe Farina,Luigi Fagioli and Alberto Ascari for their points.They pipped the Argentianians of Fangio and Jose Froilan Gonzalez,although the latter failed to score any points.The Argentinians weren't bad,taking the other three wins of the season.However,they failed to take any other podiums during the season.

The French were consistent all season long to take third place,scoring 2 seconds and 2 thirds to beat out Britian,who had a second place and a third place to show their efforts for the season.

The Belgians are next,scoring 8 points through Johnny Claes to lunge ahead of the Swiss,who actually managed to get a third at the final round at Monza.Thailand come next,scoring all their points through B. Bira.The Monaguesque have only one points finish,with Louis Chiron in his home country.He took third to give them a place ahead of the Americans,who scored 2 points through Harry Schell.The two non-points scoring countries were Ireland and Germany,with Joe Kelly and Paul Peitsch scoring no points in their one-off races respectively.

Sounds about right. Although I wouldn't count the Brits out with Button in the impeccable form he was in and Lewis having a storming race whenever he decided to shut his mouth and let his driving do the talking

Season Summary

This season was a lot closer than the previous one.Italy and Argentina were duking it out,even sharing a win together.The title race heated up in the German Grand Prix.With 2 races to go,they were neck and neck.However,Argentinia's poor performance at Belgium meant that they had to finish at least second and first with the fastest lap on both occasions.Italy then took the fastest lap and the win at thier home track,which meant that if they finished second at Pedrables,they would win the championship.And they did,taking their second title on the trot.This time Fangio was not alone heading Argentinia.Jose Froilan Gonzalez helped out by winning in Silverstone,but that was not enough.

France would third place again,with a runner-up finish at Belgium thanks to Louis Rosier.Switzerland followed suit on 12 points,with 3 third-place finishes by de Graffenreid and Rudi Fischer.

Then came a three-way tie for 5th.Britian won the tiebreak with their 3rd place finishes at France and Britian.Next up cane Belgium with Andre Pilette taking a third at their home race.Monaco round up the tie by taking no podiums.Spain would also score 2 points in the season finale with the help of Paco Godia.

The countries who failed to score were one-offs except for the USA,with Thailand's B.Bira only participating for the finale after impressing last season.

Season Summary

The Italians were completely dominant throughout the season,taking their third championship on the trot and taking every single win and fastest lap.Well,when I say Italians,I mean Italian.Alberto Ascari got every single point for the Italians bar one,in which Piero Taruffi took the honours at the Swiss Grand Prix,a race that Ascari did not compete in.Next in line were the French,taking two 2nd places and four 3rd places,having failed to score in just one race.The Brits followed suit with far better results than in their previous 2 seasons,with Ken Wharton,Mike Hawthorn and Peter Collins taking contributing to their points tally.

Next up were the Swiss,With second places in their home race and Germany.Thailand are next,with B.Bira returning for the first 4 races,scoring points in each one.Paul Frere,Johnny Claes and Roger Laurent seal up Belgium's tally.Argentina are next despite taking part in only one race.Jose Froilan Gonzalez scored all of their points in Italy,taking second place and sharing fastest lap with Ascari.The Brazillians score 5 points,with Chico Landi "Landing" their points for their country.Landi shared a drive with Jan Flinterman for a race,but more on that later.

The Germans finally get themselves on the scoresheet,with Fritz Reiss taking points in their home grand prix.The same can be said for the Netherlands,with Flintermann scoring points in Zandvoort.The reason why the country only scored one point is due to a shard drive as mentioned above.That meant the Netherlands and Brazil got 3 points for their shared drive.I decided to give Brazil 2 points and Netherlands 1 point as Chico Landi covered more laps in the car than Flintermann,giving the majority of the points to the Brazillians.The rejects of the year were America,Australia,Uruguay and East Germany,with the Uruguayans being the closest to score a point.

Season Summary

Despite not racking up the insane amount of wins last time,the Italians still got the job done,with Ascari taking Italy to glory,with Giuseppe Farina playing a supporting role by winning in Germany.It wasn't just all Italy,though.Mike Hawthorn came through at Reims to give the Brits their first ever victory while the Argentinians found their old form,taking a win at Monza and stealing a few fastest laps points from the Italians.

France have had a disappointing season overall,with Switzerland managing to pip them into 4th place.Behind them,the battle was really close between America,Germany and Belgium.America got ahead with two points finishes.One a shared drive and the other coming from a nice effort by Harry Schell.Germany managed to score 5th place with Hermann Lang,taking 5th at Switzerland.Thailand round out this trio as B.Bira finished an impressive 7th at Silverstone,taking 4th place points for the Country.Jacques Swaters managed to salving points for the Belgians at Germany.

The non-points scoring countries were East Germany,Brazil and Monaco,with Monaco oh so nearly scoring a point at Monza.

Season Summary
In theory,Italy should have taken the title,with Nino Farina heading the Ferrari Works and the Lancia due to come out with a revolutionary design.Instead,Farina missed most of the season to injury and the Lancia project was delayed,leading Argentina to easily break the five-peat Italy had going.Britian would take second as being the only country to have won a race apart from Argentina,with Mike Hawthorn taking the chequered flag at Pedrables.Germany would take 3rd spot after the revolutionary Mercedes hauled Karl Kling and Hans Hermann forward.

Italy would still take 4th,with Luigi Musso,Farina and Sergio Mantovani being their top scorers.France were actually tied with Italy on points,but had one less 2nd place to take credit.Thailand would finish 6th in their final appereance in F1,just ahead of Belgium.America scored their 3 points through Harry Schell in the season opener and Spain,once again,took 2 points with them via Paco Godia in their home race at Pedrables.

The only team to not score any points were,rather strangely,Switzerland.Quite an unusual result for a country who has finished 4th 3 seasons on the trot.

Season Summary

This season was closer than it looks.Britian actually had a chance to win the championship going into the final round providing the Argentinians failed rather epically and they won.However,it turned out to be the other way round.The Argentians won and the Brits got last place in points.Although Fangio peformed well,it was Roberto Meires who picked up the pieces for the Argentinians.At least they got fastest lap.They just beat out the Italians,who barely had any results to cheer about.France actually scored their first win through Maurice Trinnigant in Monaco,though their other races were not as impressive.Belgium were tied on points with America,but Paul Frere proved to be the tiebreaker in Belgium.Germany had a terrible season when compared to the last,however their only points finish was a rather nice one,with Karl Kling scoring nicely.Monaco also had a third place finish,but their driver placed lower.

Uruguay and Australia both made one-off attempts.Both failed to score,keeping them rooted at the bottom of the table.Being half of the reject countries out there is not a good sign,but the Australians had Jack Brabham debut that season.

NOTE:The Argentinian Grand Prix was a headache to decide which country scored what due to all the shared drives.I decided to give points to the nation of the driver who completed the most laps in the car.

Season Summary

Britian managed to claw through and get their first ever title,beating out the Argentinians in the final race.This was probably the first time that a country had two drivers share the workload to win rather than let one driver completely dominate,as Peter Collins and Stirling Moss took 2 wins each,with Hawthorn benifiting his efforts as well.Argentinia took the other three victories,and were actually 2 points away going into Monza.Then Fangio's car broke down.Even though Collins gave up his car to Fangio,the Argentinians were still done with.

France see themselves climb up through consistency while the Italians have their worst season yet.After that comes the shock of the season.Out of all countries,Spain proves to be competitive in the races they entered.They even managed two runner-up spots.Belgium come home next with Paul Frere taking 2nd in their home race.

Brazil and Switzerland were tied for points,but Hernando da Silva Ramos's 5th at Monaco overall proved to be enough to beat the Swiss.America would come home next with Harry Schell rounding out the podium at Spa.

Out of the non-scorers,Uruguay's hard luck story continues as they were 1 position away of escaping from rejectdom.Monaco come home next although they didn't even start a race.Jack Brabham's efforts for Australia again come to nought while Germany fail in their one-off effort.Finally,Switzerland launch out Jo Bonnier,although that effort clearly did not go far.

Season Summary

This season was also much closer than it looks,despite being the tightest margin of victory since 1951.Britian were 15 points back at one stage,but closed the lead tremendously through Stirling Moss and Tony Brooks at Aintree,but that still wasn't enough.Had Fangio not gone so banzai in those last laps at the Nurburgring,Britian would have eclipsed them.But instead,Argentinia took their third title through Fangio's exploits.This also being Fangio's last full season,Argentinia's rein comes to a close.

Italy score next,taking 2 second places after failing to score in the first 2 races.America comes home with a shock 4th as Harry Schell had the machinery to pull off Magic,with Masten Gregory playing a hand as 3rd place in Monaco.They leapt ahead of France,who seemed good early in the season,but faltered late in the season.

Australia finally get on the scoresheets,unrejectifying themselves.Germany,after having a few seasons near the top,fall back as their one-off appereance at Italy was their only score of the season.Still,they edged ahead of Spain,who scored points in the first race,but none after that.They were close,but no cigar.Netherlands come home next.Even though they scored no points,their only effort was in the F2 class at the Nurburgring,hence their little boost up the table.Sweden did terribly,taking part in 4 races without sucess.At least Switzerland have another reason to score no points.Their only effort was a shared drive with Ottorino Volontiero behind the wheel.

Season Summary

Luigi Musso.Reims.Phil Collins.Nurburgring.Stuart Lewis-Evans.Ain-diab.This was a season marred by tragedy.And after that would come Mike Hawthorn.Guildford.Britian had lost three of their best racing talent in a year while the Italians lost their best hope for a champion for several years.The Brits absolutely dominated the season,with all but one race being shared between 4 British Drivers.Next up would be,rather suprisingly,the Americans.They took several seconds through Harry Schell and Phil Hill.They beat the French by a point,although the French claimed the win that the Brits lost.Germany were silent until the second half of the season to take 4th in the standings.

Italy looked to be in control.However,with Musso's death,they only gained 4 points after that.Who scored those 4 points? None other than Maria Teresa De Filipis,the first female driver in F1.Jack Brabham's exploits in the Cooper game Australia some well-needed points as Argentinia followed suit,despite only scoring in 2 races,both with the retiring Fangio Behind the wheel.Sweden finally earned a few points as Bonnier scored handily for them.Belgium would take a third place at,well,Belgium while Bruce Mclaren brings home points for the New Zealanders while driving an F2 car!

Spain would not score any points,and neither does the Netherlands and Monaco,making their last appearance in F1 before Olivier Beretta in 1994.And we know how that turned out....

Season Summary

This season was a blowout for the Brits,as they took advantage of their elite field to beat the sole Australian in the Cooper.However,Brabham did a good job to win races whenever he could.However,his efforts could have been beaten by the Americans,who posted 3 straight second places,taking a fastest lap away as well.Could we see an American Dominitaion in store?

France could come out of this season happy,posting solid results to beat New Zealand by a point,despite Bruce Mclaren posting a win in the season finale at Sebring.Sweden impressed this season,with Joakim Bonnier pulling out a suprise win from the hat in the second race in the season.Next up came Belgium,who were 2 out of 3 in terms of their points finishes.Germany had a very disappointing season overall,even finishing behind newcomers Portugal.

Several teams did not score points,with Uruguay on the cusp on becoming rejects forever,Monaco make their final appereance in a long while and finally "Italy and Argentinia share the 'honour' of being the first champions not to score points in a year.

With next year providing a new points system,placing 6 finishers and no fastest lap points,it is bound to be interesting.

I honestly thought Australia had this one in the bag.Britian only had two wins this year while Australia had five,all in a row.So,where did it all go wrong?Simple.When Jack Brabham wasn't holding the Australian flag on the top step of the podium,his only other score was a 3rd place at Riverside in the season finale.Britian were consistent,scoring points with every single race,meaning that their two wins at Monaco and the USA was enough to guarantee them the title.In fact,Britian were 1 point behind Australia going into Riverside,with 3rd place New Zealand not far behind.In fact,New Zealand almost overtook Australia at the final race.

America are next after taking their first ever Formula One win at Monza,with Phil Hill at the wheel.They scrapped past the Germans,who were consistent but low points finishers.Belgium come up next with 2 second places,a rather impressive result.Sweden prove that last year was not that much of a fluke.We again see Argentinia and Italy battling it out,eventually being tied on points.....for 8th.France have had a shocker of a season,tying on points with Portugal,who again impress in their home race.

Spain once again fails to make it into the points with their one-off effort and the Venezuelans have an early shot at F1,but are immediately rejected.

Season Summary

Although they had one less win than the British,the Americans managed to pull off fantastic consistency,never falling off the podium once and taking two wins to bring the Nation's Cup to America.You can't blame the Brits for trying though,although reliability put their hopes aside.Germany seemed to have a strong chance to win the championship,but Wolfgang von Trips fatal crash put a tragic end to those hopes.

New Zealand continue on their great form,although they had no wins during the season.Once again,Sweden prove to be a high midfielder,something that actually suprised me here.I also thought that Italy would go throughout the season with Baghetti's sole win at France,but were able to pick up 2 points later on.This season sees the fall from grace for Australia,as their sole representative,Jack Brabham,had a very uncompetitive Cooper when compared to last season.

Netherlands had a very average season,while Belgium scored a podium at their home race,but that's about it points-wise.France had an absolute rubbish season,claiming just 3 points.Canada and South Africa both make their debuts on the right foot,scoring a 5th each.They did better than Switzerland,who just scored one solitary point with Michael May at the helm.Putting up the rear was Mexico,whose one-off attempt was a failure.

With alternative championships, I love them but tend to be more interested in the more recent years (mainly the 80s to date) so I tend to not comment much on earlier years but will do when you get through to modern times!

I know that he did finish 11th as mentioned,but I completely forgot to mention that shared drives get no points,as the rules show with Triningant and Moss sharing a drive to third at Argentinia 1960,but receiving no points.Gendebein did indeed finish 6th with the eliminations,but he shared it with Masten Gregory,which counts him out.It would have been fine with me had he shared it with another Belgian,then the country would have got the point. Sorry if I forgot to mention.

Season Summary

Britian,with this championship,now have the all-time record for most championships won with 5.This was another season of domination for the Brits,taking all but 2 wins throughout the course of the season.Their only main rival was America,who took 5 second places and a win,but that was obviously not enough to catch the Brits,although they did lead at the mid-season mark.Whenever these two were on the top 2 steps of the podium,it was New Zealand coming in third,while taking the odd victory at Monaco.

South Africa put up a really good show,with Tony Maggs taking in all 19 points for the country,even bagging a second in France and a third at his home Grand Prix.Australia are gradually back on the rise,with just one podium to add to their consistent scoring.Italy come home 3rd despite taking just 3 points finishes.They made the most of those as 2 of them were podium places.Following Italy was an incredible three-way tie for 7th.Mexico go on top of the group as they managed to get a podium in Belgium,something that the Netherlands or Sweden failed to achieve.Netherlands come home next as they took one more 5th place than Sweden,as Sweden's point scoring runs drop slightly.

Belgium are next with another 4-point haul,though this time in separate races.Maurice Trintignant spare the French's blushes by salvaging two 6ths in consecutive races.Rhodesia make their mark in the season finale,scoring a point as John Love drove in the South African Grand Prix.Three countries did not score points,however,I separated Argentinia from the rest as they managed to not qualify their only attempt in the season,hence finishing dead last.

Season Summary

The Brits were utterly dominant this season,taking every single win and pole position,while being 'kind' to let America take just one fastest lap.They broke their previous record of most wins in a season,while sharing Italy's record of the highest win percentage in a season.America proved that they were no slouch either,with dominance when compared against the rest of the pack.New Zealand seemed to be left red-faced,allowing America to take such an advantage.They managed 4 podiums,though,something that they can be proud about.

Australia decided to let New Zealand know that they have yet to secure full bragging rights,as Brabham pushed as hard as he can for the Aussies,but they came 2 points shy of taking the best country in Oceania.South Africa have another decent season despite their lack of consistency,which almost led the Swedes to a great finish in what was a brilliant season for them.Italy seemed to spark a mini-revival,taking two third places despite a lack of appearances.Switzerland and the Netherlands were also tied on points,but Siffert's run in Holland meant that the all-important 8th position was secured for the Swiss.Germany,admittedly,don't have much to cheer about,but their only points finish was a podium.And Canada make a return to F1,unrejectifying themselves in the process with a 6th at Watkins Glen.

Several countries make appearances without scoring points,although,admittedly,France should have scored a point in the races they entered.However,they ended up one place behind each time.

Season Summary

Britian again showed their dominance by winning most races of the season,with Jim Clark,Graham Hill and John Surtees all winning for their country,with Bob Anderson stepping in when these guys had apparent off day.And when the Brits had an off day,as you might expect,America were there to pick up the pieces,winning in France and Mexico.America were challenged by Italy,with Lorenzo Bandini sparking a charge by getting several high-scoring points finishes in the latter half of the season,peaking with a win at Zeltweg.

New Zealand had another stellar season to their name,as they took three runner-up spots,although they missed on that elusive victory.Australia and Switzerland were tied for 5th,but Australia prevailed over the small suprise of the season by countback.Behind them,Sweden continue to impress on their fine run of points over the year while another tie broke out behind them.South Africa,who dropped dramatically after their breakout year in 1962,just edged France to an all-important 8th spot.This may be the end of France's long run of points,with star driver Maurice Trintingant leaving F1 after Italy.No one can blame him.After all,he was 47.Rounding out the points scoring countries was Mexico,who put on a star performance in their one and only race.

Germany were suprise non-scorers,as were Belgium.You cannot blame Austria for being out of the points,however.Their made their debut appearance through Jochen Rindt their home GP.

Just a little bump and an explanation as to why this thread has recieved very few updates.Now,normally I use Excel to do the points scoring on my computer,however the Internet reception to the computer is absolutely rubbish.With my Mac downstairs,I have to a)Use the iPad to post,which is very tedious,or b)re-tabulate the scores on pen and paper(Which is what I did for the 1950 and 1957 seasons.)Also,there will be no updates until at least Tuesday or Monday as I am heading off to Sepang for the Malaysian Grand Prix.In the meantime,I shall post results for the Australian Grand Prix:(Using 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 points as I think that the new points will see too many countries scoring too many points.)

Season Summary

If there is one word to describe the 60's Nations Cup,it would be Britian.Once again,the almost unstoppable force got 1st in all races bar 1,which was given to the Americans,who were yet again runners-up,a place they kept since 1962.Mind you,the top three have been exactly the same since 1962 in the same order.This is certainly a major help in betting pools.

Still,betters had a small scare as Italy came quite close to breaking status quo,Lorenzo Bandini proving to be a major boost to the Italians.Next up was Switzerland,who once again had Jo Siffert to lead the way just ahead of Australia.Sweden score lower than usual,but still rack up a healthy points total when compared to others.Austria unrejectify themselves with a podium in Germany,as Mexico yet again depend on the final 2 races for points.Special mention must go to South Africa and Rhodesia,who both managed points together in their one-off effort at Kylami.That puts hefty shame on the Belgians and Germans as they end the season with nought.

Season Summary

Britian finally had a challenge on their hands,but it wasn't coming from across the pond.Instead,the people from Down Under managed to challenge the Brits hard,as they each got 4 wins apiece,with Ludovico Scarfiotti taking the victory for the Italians in front of the tifosi.However,the big factor was what happened when they didn't win.Britian still managed a podium finish each time they failed to win,while the Aussies(read Jack Brabham) only took a measly 9 points,gifting Britian their 9th Nations Cup.

Tied on points with Italy was Austria,with representative Jochen Rindt putting on consistent,if not solid displays.However,Scarfiotti's win relegated them down to 4th.New Zealand proved that Oceania wasn't to be messed with as they took on a reduced but still solid role in the championship.This season,however,sees the Americans take their first great fall from grace.With only the Anglo-American Racers and Team Chamaco,they took a sudden drop.Next up was France,as they scored in each of the first 6 races.Jean-Pierre Beltoise took their F2 point,but all the other point were won by.....Guy Ligier.Yep,the rejectful driver had managed to represent his country in a good way.Sweden took a small fall from past performances this year.

Switzerland also took a sudden drop in level as they only scored 3 times.However,Mexico really took a sharp drop.Despite competing in more races than usual,they only got 1 point.Yes,one.Belgium and Germany are once again at the bottom,but they were F2 efforts,so there is not much to worry about and that also means that every single country(in the main series) managed to score a point.

Season Summary

Well,the high points total doesn't really mean that the Brits cakewalked the field.In actual fact,had they been pressured all the way by New Zealand,who put up yet another dominant showing with three wins.And this time,they were also reliable,scoring points on every occasion.Meanwhile,in an unchallenged third place comes Belgium,with Jacky Ickx showing the field how to drive.Between Round 3 at Monaco and Round 9 at Monza,Ickx took home 6 Nations Cup podiums for Belgium,including a win at Rouen-Les-Essarts.

The Swiss had a breakthrough year,scoring one win in Britian to tie with Mexico for fourth.The win gave the Swiss the countback advantage,however.France also ran them very close,and were tied on points with Switzerland going into the final race.However,Switzerland finished 5th and the French 6th,which means that,for a year,French people may get heckled by Swiss F1 fans across the Alps,claiming their country is "better".

Moving Swiftly on,Austria had a good year with two second places.However,they could only muster up 3 more points for the rest of the year.Italy looked very strong in the first 3 races,however Ludovico Scarfiotti's death ended the Italian's campaign prematurely with two third places.America had just a sole second place to their name after being plagued by poor reliability.Meanwhile,by Nations Cup criteria,Sweden and Australia were impossible to seperate on 5 points each.Finally,Rhodesia make their traditional sole appearance at South Africa and manage a point out of it.

South Africa itself couldn't score on home ground and apparently neither could Germany or Canada,having downright embarassing runs in their home countries.

Season Summary
Jackie Stewart was for Britian in 1969 as Ascari was for Italy in 1952/1953.He took the bulk of Britian's points as he thouroughly trashed his opposition.New Zealand were sitting periously in second place,having not scored a win compared to Belgium's two.After that,Switzerland were sandwiched by France and Austria,with Austria taking their first win in Watkins Glen.However,reliability let them down as their other points were mostly podiums.Australia come in a disappointing 7th when compared to past successes.Mexico had an average season while Germany struck points for the first time in 6 years in Germany.Kurt Ahrens Jr.'s 7th place meant that they also beat Rhodesia,with Sam Tingle scoring for his country for the very first time.America were outright disappointing,even with Mario Andretti,as only Pete Lovely scored.Sweden and Canada fail to score points this year.

Season Summary

Many people in the paddock knew New Zealand had title potential.And they proved it this season,with Denny Hulme and Chris Amon working together.They could have sealed the title earlier had Bruce McLaren survived his Can-Am crash at Goodwood.Austria may just have lost their only title chance for now as Jochen Rindt crashed fatally in Italy,cutting their chances short by just 3 points.Belgium scored the most over the last 3 races thanks to Jacky Ickx,but that was too little,too late.Belgium scored 36 points in 6 races at the end of the season.

Britian took a fall from grace,as the plunged with poor reliability from Jackie Stewart and not much help elsewhere.They were almost beaten by Switzerland and France,who were completely contrasting to each other.France scored a lot but with not much points either time.Switzerland scored on a few occasions but scored high whenever they did,even taking a win at Monza.The Australians were also title favourites,but they magically dropped pace in the second half of the year.Other notables were party-trashers Brazil,who simply popped in mid-season with Emerson Fittapaldi and promptly took a win away from Mexico.Rhodesia again make their traditional apperance in South Africa,and they score points again.Canada and Spain took part in several races,but were either too unreliable or,in Spain's case,didn't even start a Grand Prix.
