Donations?

Postby Nuppiz » 22 Apr 2012, 09:17

Based on an idea I got here.

eytl wrote:P.S. To all those nominating F1 Rejects for the forum black-out during the race and ongoing hack issues. I'm afraid Jamie is even busier than I am (he always is at this time of year when the rugby season in Australia is really kicking off), and the reality is, if we want to run a proper website on a better server ... "show me the money"!

Ladies and gentlemen of the F1 Rejects forums, I am sure that most of you have noticed the problems the site (and especially the forum) has encountered in the past few weeks. Not only has it become a security threat because of some nasty hackers, the general reliability of the site has gone down as well. Connection timeouts have become more and more frequent, sometimes for a long period of time. And as the comment by Enoch above states, while the former problem can (hopefully) be rectified when Jamie finds enough time, the latter can't unless Jamie and Enoch suddenly win in a lottery or something.

Which brings us to my actual point of this post: how many of you would be willing to donate money, if even very minor sums, to make sure that the site lives long and prospers on a proper server? It would have to be much (only a few €/£/$ once in a few months), especially if a lot of people are willing to donate. The technical side of it shouldn't be a problem, as based on what I've read the PayPal Donate system is very effective, secure and easy to put on the website. Of course, it all comes down to J&E if they want to put his on their site in the first place.

Well, considering i offered to pay 3000€ for our race team that never hapenned, i'll sure can miss 30€ for the website?
But i have to be 100% sure this money goes straight to Enoch and Jamie, and not to some forum-member acting as middle-person.

It goes to a PayPal account that is set during the setup process (the account can be presumably changed at any time), and if either one of our admins register there and set their account as the recipient, then they receive the money we send directly without middle-mans (other than PayPal itself).

I would also donate some money into a pay-pal account made by Jamie & Enoch.

Yeah. As long as it's set up in Jamie & Enoch's name I will donate a decent amount. Is it a monthly payment we have to give or one lump sum and the new website is paid for?

It would still have to be paid for every now and then - usually the payments take place once in one or two years. But it's certainly not a monthly payment for any donaters - the key word here is "voluntary". As long as a sufficient sum of money is gathered by the time the site has to pay it's bills, there's going to be no problem at all. The more people donate, the smaller are the sums needed.

Bumping this topic due to the recent downtime we experienced.

Who would be interested in this? And more importantly, are J & E interested in this?

Probably a good time to bump this up now.

I'd definitely throw in a few quid behind the cause...

Agreed, what we've had recently has probably been the worst outbreak of downtime the forum has ever had and I'm willing to throw in a decent amount if it means we can get a good server and a forum software upgrade. I'm even willing to set up a monthly or annual "subscription" to ensure the bills are paid, as I know on other forums one of the usual features every year is doing the rounds for donations to pay the fees.

Honestly, I think it's Jamie and Enoch's website and while they can do what they like with it, they're not doing enough to sustain such a large community. If you want to run a website that has such a large group of users you can't be completely hands-off about it. Nothing will change unless those guys are more proactive about it and reach out to the community for help, and let the community get stuck in and fix the problems.

But right now we're just completely powerless and can't help even if we wanted to.
