Istanbul's Turn 8 needs a name

Postby CarlosFerreira » 06 Jun 2009, 22:39

I'm sorry, but I can't stand it anymore. Turn 8? It's just silly. If Eau Rouge, Radillon, 130R, Beckets, Maggots, Chapel or Ste Devote all have names, why won't the fabulous Turn 8 have one?

Come on, let's see some really reject suggestions. I'll start with "Mad Max Corner".

I don't put any proposal now but I really think most corners should be named. Just imagine if they would make modifications to early parts of Istanbul track and then former turn 8 is turn 7 or turn 9.

Because of its 4 apexes, I used to call it "Quadruple Bend" when the track was brand new. Later, Turn 8 stuck because everybody called it that. Apart from that, my names for Turns 1 and 2 are the "Senna S", the infield section of Turns 5, 6 and 7 makes up the infield section with names like "Infield Entrance", "Fingertip Corner" and "Infield Exit", whilst the kink in the back straight, is just the "Kink" (Max's Kink is a much sweeter name, though). The final section ending the lap received the name "Dog Leg", because that's what it is.
“Mexico City is a better place to hold the (Mexican GP) than Cancun,” said Ecclestone. “In more or less any city around the world you could ask people ‘where is Mexico City?’ and they would say ‘Mexico’.”

I think it should be called the Monteiro Curve in honor of him punting Montoya off there in 2005.

Considering the owner and his egotistical nature, I'm shocked the corners around the track haven't been named Bernie 1, Bernie 2, Bernie 3...

Given recent developments in his life plus the difficult nature of the corner, Turn 8 should be named Slavica, shouldn't it?

Yeah!

Monteiro punted Montoya at the end of the back straight (before turn 12). Montoya with his car damaged then run wide at turn 8 allowing Alonso past.

About other tracks where corners should be named: I would like to see Shanghai's corners named after Chinese horoscope. There are 12 of them but I would consider turns 1-2, 3-4, 12-13 and 14-15 as one corner.

And Istanbul, the kink on back straight could be "dog corner" because that's the place where Bruno Senna had his crash with stray dog last year.

i know, it's just that a few friend and i were also discussing this exact thing on other forums..
it was just as jest, but really most people think that turn 8 needs a proper name.

Maybe we can get some FIA/Bernie input in the AMD F1 survey.

I think we should call it the Ecclestone Complex.

It gives the owner of the track some credit, too.

I think that it's only fair to name the most interesting turn after the new circuit's most successful driver. So, given Felipe's dominance in Turkey, the only logical name is:

Curve Your Enthusiasm

Turkin8tor

Kebab Kurve

Or in the manner of Spa, Silverstone and other European circuits. If you draw a line on the map going away from the track from that corner, you end up in the general direction of Göçbeyli. Doesn't sound so good then does it?

Or again in the manner of Spa, we could just call it, "The left hander at the top of the hill"

In all seriousness I think they should call it something like Atatürk turn, after the founder of modern Turkey. Adds a bit of local colour without being too silly.

A few years ago i seem to remeber that Bernie had tried to get all comentators to use call the corners at all circuits using the numbers as he did not like the use of named corners as quite a few circuits had corners named after trade brands.....
