Snake points alternative championship

Postby Bleu » 21 Dec 2010, 05:00

Another idea what came to my mind. In this alternative championship, there is no elimination of any kind. However, the winner is always the one who takes lowest point-scoring position and so on. The original winner is 5th in early days, 6th until 2002, 8th in 2003-09 and 10th in 2010. There are some exceptions to this rule: if there are less classified finishers than eligible point-scoring positions, drivers climb up. So Patrick Friesacher is the winner of 2005 US GP with Michael Schumacher finishing 6th (it takes while to get there but it was a small spoiler for that)

So, let's start.
1950 (2-3-4-6-8 for top 5, best four results count)
Louis Rosier 22 (1 win, 1 2nd, 2 3rd)
Prince Bira 14 (1 win, 1 2nd)
Luigi Fagioli 13 (16) (1 3rd)
Alberto Ascari 12,5 (1 win)
Philippe Etancelin 12 (2 wins*)
Giuseppe Farina 12 (1 2nd)
Felice Bonetto 8 (1 win)
Yves Giraud-Cabantous 6 (1 2nd)
Raymond Sommer 6 (1 2nd)
Cecil Green 6 (1 2nd)
Robert Manzon 6 (1 2nd)
Juan Manuel Fangio 6 (3 5th)
Joie Chitwood 4 (1 win*)
Tony Bettenhausen 4 (1 win*)
Eugene Chaboud 4 (1 win*)
Reg Parnell 4 (1 3rd)
Louis Chiron 4 (1 3rd)
Mauri Rose 4 (1 3rd)
Peter Whitehead 4 (1 3rd)
Bill Holland 3 (1 4th)
Johnnie Parsons 2 (1 5th)
Dorino Serafini 1,5 (1 4th*)

I love alternative championships. Can't wait to see how this pans out in later years but instantly I've thought of at least one reject legend who wins a race. ;-)

On with 1951. No more today.
Giuseppe Farina 20 (22) (1 win, 1 2nd, 2 3rd*)
Luigi Villoresi 20 (24) (2 2nd, 2 3rd)
Piero Taruffi 19 (2 wins)
Felice Bonetto 16 (1 win, 1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Reg Parnell 14 (1 win, 1 2nd)
Alberto Ascari 13 (14,5) (1 2nd)
Jose Froilan Gonzalez 12 (13,5) (1 3rd)
Juan Manuel Fangio 10 (11)(2 4th)
Emmanuel de Graffenried 8 (1 win)
Bobby Ball 8 (1 win)
Yves Giraud-Cabantous 8 (1 win)
Consalvo Sanesi 6 (1 2nd)
Andy Linden 6 (1 2nd)
Louis Rosier 6 (1 2nd)
Mike Nazaruk 3 (1 4th)
Jack McGrath 2 (1 3rd*)
Manuel Ayulo 2 (1 3rd*)
Lee Wallard 2 (1 5th)
Luigi Fagioli 1 (1 5th*)

Villoresi scored more but net points decide and Farina wins the title with better record. Taruffi was only to win twice, only to lose title.

So this year, the 10th placed driver will effectively be the race winner? Interesting.......

Rejects who have scored points automatically get podiums, don't they?

Awesome.

Bleu, I'll post my predictions to you for champions the 80s, 90s and 00s in time when I've thought about it, but I'm thinking most about this year, as to who finished in 8th, 9th and 10th most often. I'm thinking the favourites are Schumacher, Barrichello (ironic given how they were at Ferrari!), Hulkenberg, Sutil (!), and maybe even....hold your breath.......Kobayashi (his rubbish start to the year might scupper him though)!! I'd say outside chances for Rosberg, Kubica and maybe even Liuzzi.

With the top 6 system always. With 2010 points system would not always be, string of 7th would not help with unrejectifying, neither would be podium here.

Changed my mind, Sutil only had one 10th place. Barrichello had three so it'll more likely be him. Boo.

Theoretically, the point was to make drivers be more aggresive in the races, because winning was much more important than being consistent with that points system (just ask Alain Prost for his 1988 season...)

The 1955 Argentine GP confused the life out of me when doing my alternative championship for that year!

Anyway, here are my predictions for 1981 onwards (I've hidden these for people who don't want to be spoiled, but want to see how many I can get right for the years I'm familiar with). Anyone who wants to read them can highlight them!

1981 De Angelis
1982 Alboreto
1983 Laffite
1984 Arnoux
1985 De Angelis
1986 Prost (may sound odd but he got 2 6ths and scored in nearly every race, any dropped scores will be his wins)
1987 Johansson
1988 Boutsen
1989 Warwick (may sound strange but can't think of anyone else who got regular minor points scores)
1990 Piquet
1991 Piquet again
1992 Hakkinen
1993 Brundle (!!!!!)
1994 Alesi (that's a tough one, similar to 1989)
1995 Frentzen
1996 Hakkinen
1997 Alesi
1998 Villeneuve (this he was the most regular scorer of the Williams/Benetton/Jordan "chasing pack")
1999 Irvine (only two races he missed the points)
2000 Villeneuve
2001 Heidfeld !!!!!
2002 Coulthard (two all-important 6ths early in the year and regular points from then on)
2003 Webber (lots of 6ths and 7ths may compensate for no 8ths)
2004 Fisichella
2005 Ralf Schumacher
2006 Heidfeld again!!!!
2007 Kovalainen
2008 Webber
2009 Rosberg
2010 Barrichello

If I get all those right then you can all call me a serious anorak. ;-)

Jose Froilan Gonzalez 4 (1 win*)
Alfonso de Portago 4 (1 win*)
Giorgio Scarlatti 4 (1 win*)
Carlos Menditeguy 4 (1 3rd)

Wolfgang von Trips 4 (1 3rd)
Tony Brooks 4 (1 4th)
Jean Behra 3 (1 4th)
Jim Rathmann 3 (1 4th)

No less that eight drivers had title chance by the final round. Championship leader Schell took the shared win with Scarlatti and sealed the title by a good margin.

Since F2 drivers competed in the same race at Nurburgring and one of them was actually fifth and ineligible for points, there was only top four getting points. Also, shared drives were now ineligible for points. For some reason one happened in Italy and there was no 2nd placed driver then. Meanwhile, Schell becomes the first multiple world champion.

1962
Jack Brabham 23 (1 win, 1 2nd, 2 3rd)
Tony Maggs 20 (1 win, 1 2nd)
John Surtees 20 (2 2nd, 1 3rd)
Bruce McLaren 19 (22) (1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Carel Godin de Beaufort 18 (2 wins)
Graham Hill 18 (21) (1 win, 1 3rd)
Jo Bonnier 15 (1 win, 1 2nd)
Ricardo Rodriguez 13 (1 win, 1 3rd)
GIancarlo Baghetti 10 (1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Dan Gurney 10 (1 2nd)
Masten Gregory 9 (1 win)
Neville Lederle 9 (1 win)
Phil Hill 8 (2 4th)
Jim Clark 7 (1 3rd)
Innes Ireland 6 (1 2nd)
Richie Ginther 5 (1 4th)
Willy Mairesse 4 (1 3rd)
Lorenzo Bandini 3 (1 4th)
Trevor Taylor 2 (1 5th)

Bonnier didn't compete in the final event (he theoretically would have had a chance for the title) while Rodriguez had died in non-championship event about two months previously. Would have been eight-way battle, turned out to be six-way. Brabham's third place was enough to give him title, as the top two scored their first points of the season!

It does make me laugh when a total legend of the sport like Jackie Stewart wins an alternative championship that they're probably not "supposed" to win!

Yes!!

Still a bit before my time but if I'd been a fan in those days I think I'd have been a big Amon fan. Nice!!!
