*** DAMON HILL ***

Raw Pace - 7.5
Never spectacularly fast but was always a serious challenger to Schumacher.

Strategic Ability - 7.0
When you had a Williams in the early to mid-90s, you didn't really need tactics. Don't remember anything in particular.

Personal Reliability - 9.0
Definitely a consistent driver.

Entertainment Value - 5.0
I never actually warmed to him that much until he left for Arrows. When he won, it was usually a dull race (but he was rather good in the rain), and I always looked forward to seeing Schumacher racing more than Hill.

Personal Sympathy - 7.0
Deserved at least one championship, and that's what he got. His time at Arrows and Jordan was heartwarming, but he seemed to drop his head when he knew he didn't have a good car rather than pushing through.

Another all-time legend looking to be rated by you:

*** ALAIN PROST ***

Raw Pace - 7.5
While he built his reputation on being the best on Sunday you cannot outqualify Senna occasionally if you are not fast over one lap.

Strategic Ability - 10.0
Conserving your car for final strikes near the end of the race was his greatest ability and it made him the star he was and still is.

Personal Reliability - 9.5
This is logic consequence, you cannot conserve your car to such an extent if you are not reliable - only missing half a point because his antics at Ferrari in 1991.

Entertainment Value - 7.0
Well, he won't be remembered as Formula 1's number one sports entertainer, but still, his battles against Senna were quite exciting and will have appeal even for modern viewers.

Personal Sympathy - 9.5
One of my favourites, I think he's one of the three contenders for the title of best F1 driver of all time.
Bruno Spengler does not approve of your tomfoolery.

Prost

Raw pace: 8
Not godlike in qualifying, but if you gave him a decent car, he could pull off good results

Strategic ability: 10
He isn't called the Professor for nothing - he might have not been the fastest, but back then, controlling the car without "overloading" it was important

Personal reliability: 9
Remember Monaco 1982, where he was leading the race, and then threw it away almost within sight of the finish line. Also, his 1991 Ferrari season wasn't that good.

Entertainment value: 8
He was one of the drivers who could get even close to Senna. Plus, his team ownership was funny to watch sometimes... :D

Personal Sympathy: 9
I like him. Only reason why giving a 9 instead of 10 is his bad team-leading ability.

ALAIN PROST

Raw pace - 9
He was not as fast as Senna, but let's not fool ourselves: he was bloody damn fast.

Strategic ability - 10
He used to sacrifice qualifying performance to work on his race set-up, and he was very intelligent when it came to take decisions during races and in setting up the car. The Professor, speaks for itself.

Personal reliability - 10
It was impossible to be truly reliable driving a Renault in the 80s, but when he had reliable cars, he was the best at it. Take a look at his 1986 and 1989 titles...

Entertaining value - 5
Not really that entertaining except for when he pulled off some of his clinical passing moves. Still, steady driving was his hallmark, and that's why I admire him.

Personal simpathy - 8
I never really had anything against him - and I'm a huge Ayrton Senna fan.

Alain Prost:

Raw Pace: 8
Well by default if you can outqualify Senna you have to be pretty damn quick

Strategic Ability: 10
I don't think there is anyone out there better than "The Professor"

Personal Reliability: 9.5
I'm taking away half a point for his Ferrari antics and throwing away the 1982 Monaco Grand Prix but he is one of the best in this category

Entertainment Value: 6.5
I would have only given him 5 based on on-track performances alone but his time as a time boss was comically and absurdly entertaining.

Personal Sympathy: 8
I don't really have anything against him. Bonus points for having to deal with the useless prats at Peugeot.

Alain Prost

Raw Pace: 8
He was very fast, just not on Saturdays, but, he was blindingly quick during races.

Strategic Ability: 10
Prost was unbeatable strategically, and had that knack of getting the best of the car when needed.

Personal Reliability: 9

Entertainment Value: 6
Not very entertaining other than his rivalry with Senna, and his tenure as the boss of Prost.

Personal Sympathy: 8.5

I have decided to change to choice of the next driver - YOU are going to choose. So please name the driver you want to be rated next in your post from now on. Let's get one obvious nomination out of the way though:

*** AYRTON SENNA ***

Raw Pace - 10.0
THE qualifying master. Noone can doubt that he was among the absolute best of all time in that regard.

Strategic Ability - 8.0
While Prost was obviously superior in this regard, Senna could hold his own and deal well with changing conditions

Personal Reliability - 7.0
Without a certain degree of reliability you just don't get as far in F1 as he did. On the other hand we had gaffes like his start to the tragic 1994 season with two retirements due to accidents.

Entertainment Value - 9.5
When Senna was on, you could expect a show. Both his driving and his character were filling headlines at his time.

Personal Sympathy - 3.0
Oh boy. While it may be harsh to always ride the same dead horse, Suzuka 1990 just avoids a better rating. That was just psychopathic and normal people would've served jail time for it. His charity efforts gain him those points, though.

Ayrton Senna
Raw Pace: 10
He outqualified Prost in the same car by a second at Monaco. That takes some serious speed.

Strategic Ability: 9
Not on the same level as Prost but very good nonetheless - Donington 1993 was an excellent example.

Personal Reliability: 8
Again, Prost has the advantage here, but you don't win 3 world championships by being inconsistent

Entertainment Value: 10
One of the best drivers, if not the best, to watch on the track.

Personal Sympathy: 5
I can respect him as a great racing driver, but his ruthlessness leaves a bitter taste behind.

As for the next driver to be rated, I suggest we close out the generally perceived top 5 F1 drivers and go with Jim Clark or Juan Manuel Fangio.

*** AYRTON SENNA ***

Raw Pace - 10.0
You don´t win 41 races without being seriously good.

Strategic Ability - 9.0
Not perfect here, because Prost was better than him at it. Anyway, his knowledge of his car allowed him to adapt his pace according to the state of his car and tyres.

Personal Reliability - 8.0
Usually suffered a couple of accidents per season, but something reasonable counting on the risks he used to take.

Entertainment Value - 10.0
A true showman, both in and out of the car.

Personal Sympathy - 10.0
As many other F1 fans, he was my childhood hero.

No point in changing Senna's rating; he deserves straight 10s...

As my user name is JPM, I'd better go with the one and only...

Raw Pace - 10.0
Strategic Ability - 6.0
Personal Reliability - 4.0
Entertainment Value - 10.0
Personal Sympathy - 8.0

Done.

Christian Klien; I know he's already been done too, but meh.

Raw Pace - 7.0
Reguarly beat Coulthard in qualifying and was better than Liuzzi in the same car. He won the Zandvoort F3 masters aged 19, so he must have had some talent?

Strategic Ability - 7.0
Meh

Personal Reliability - 6.0
Finished all his races for HRT last year, and didn't crash at Singapore in his first time in the car whilst Senna spun off everywah.

Entertainment Value - 5.0
Meh.

Personal Sympathy - 8.0
for getting dumped by RBR right after he only lost 3rd at Monaco (later taken by his team-mate) to gerabox failure, and for being overlooked again in 2011 despite destroying Bruno Senna repeatedly at HRT

Now for a couple of new ones...

1) Esteban Tuero

Raw Pace - 7.0
Strategic Ability - 2.0 (anyone seen that comical 28.0 second Minardi pitstop on Youtube?)
Personal Reliability - 4.0
Entertainment Value - 8.0
Personal Sympathy - 7.0

2) TIME TO GET SERIOUS; Nigel Mansell

Raw Pace - 9.0
Strategic Ability - 7.0
Personal Reliability - 8.0
Entertainment Value - 10.0
Personal Sympathy - 7.0 (tended to whinge too much)

Not really his fault that Minardi were woefully unprepared for that stop...

Come on, it's Ayrton Senna. A few more votes wouldn't be inadequate, would they? :D

Interesting, I always thought of him as a cock. I was unusual for a Portuguese F1 fan in that I always favoured Nelson Piquet over Ayrton Senna and although I could recognise Senna's undeniable talent and skill, I was thought he was an arsehole.

It is not unheard of. I, for instance, always treated Senna as a rival (I was a Williams and Mansell fan) and when Senna joined Williams I got overjoyed, all my respect became love and, finally, though that Williams would become unstoppable (just to show how high I respected Senna) and then San Marino happened...

I believe that almost all F1 Portuguese speaking fan preferred Senna to Piquet unless he grew watching Piquet winning in his Brabham. Besides this, Piquet case was not helped when he was sort of vilified in Brazil (I think it has to do with his behaviour) and that spread to Portugal. Having said all this I have an uncle who thinks Piquet was the real deal and Senna was a follower...
