The Q1-Q2-Q3 Alternative Championship

Okay, the principle is quite simple: every qualifying session counts for points. Since this championship will go only from 2006 to 2011 I will present some nice reports.

2006 Formula One season
Round 1: Bahrain

In Q1, Alonso was the force to beat, earning the full 10 points with Button being second 2 tenths behind. Unfortunately for Räikkönen, any chance of scoring points is ruined by his technical failure which also crushes Ralf Schumacher's shot. Impressive debut by young Nico Rosberg, scoring 5 points.

Result: F. Alonso - J. Button - G. Fisichella - N. Rosberg - J. Montoya - C. Klien - M. Schumacher - N. Heidfeld

Q2 held the same winner in form of Fernando Alonso, again with the same advantage, Montoya taking the second place this time around. Fisichella stays third but Rosberg's nice work came completely undone. New Ferrari driver Felipe Massa beats the super world champion Micheal Schumacher who had the same time as Button*

Q3, with a larger fuel load, provided an interesting change, Michael shows his talent and takes his 65th pole position and the full 10 points for this beat, beating his team mate by 40 thousands of a second. Previous double winner Fernando Alonso suffers and goes back to fourth place behind Jenson Button.

Round 2: Malaysia

McLaren were the force to beat in Q1 with Räikkönen coming back strongly from his problem in Bahrain to finish second behind Montoya who strengthens his position in the title race. Coulthard scores his first points of the season with third place being the only other car in the 1'34 range.

No McLaren win in the second qualifying session where Honda takes their first 10 points as an own squad. Renault bounce back from the loss in Q1 and take the second and third place in Q2, edging out Webber for the final "podium spot". Montoya does only get one point, barely beating the Schumacher brothers.

With Renault having bounced back in Q3 the odds were on a Renault pole and what happens? Fisichella steps up and takes it. But perhaps more impressing is the third place of Nico Rosberg who joins Webber in fifth place for a very good result by Williams. Ralf Schumacher's engine robbed any chance of points.

Round 3: Australia

And again Q1 belongs to Juan Pablo Montoya again just getting the best of his team mate, which raises questions regarding team orders. "Hometown Hero" Mark Webber takes third place with noticeable distance to the top two. Trulli scores his first points in fourth place, the first double points finish for Toyota.

Just like Malaysia, Q2 is the time of rebound for Renault, Alonso scores the win. But this time, Montoya is much closer and takes the eight points, still aiding his battle for first place. Webber came again close to scoring 6 points, but Nick Heidfeld chose to ruin his party.

Talk about being "saving the best for last" - after barely making the points in Q1 and Q2, Button used a good fuel load to score the ten points in the final session, showing both Renault and McLaren the door. Webber drops down the ranking but he still makes points in all sessions.

Round 4: San Marino

Back in Europe and Renault go at it with Alonso dominating Q1, beating Kimi Räikkönen and a very strong Ralf Schumacher cleanly to gain 10 points. Speaking of Ralf, Toyota is very strong this time around, unlike (former) championship leader Montoya who enters Q2 but does not score points.

Q2 is almost like Q1, a dominating winner with Räikkönen and Schumi II behind. But this time around Michael Schumacher takes provisional pole, whereas Alonso drops to seventh place and can only take two points. Noticeable is Massa's fourth place, first points since Q1 in Malaysia.

Schumacher goes on in Q3 and finally beats the pole record of Ayrton Senna whereas the two Hondas take P2 and P3, Barrichello scoring his best finish of the season. Montoya finally makes points in San Marino but the damage to his title chances may come back to haunt him later this season.

Round 5: Europe

Fernando Alonso is really looking for his second world title, winning Q1. But a new challenger appears, Michael Schumacher seems to have a better car since the fly-away races and is willing to take the battle to Fernando. But both of them must not forget watching out for Jenson and the two McLaren.

Q2 is a German home win, Michael Schumacher gets the upper hand on the competition and reduces Alonso's advantage just like second-placed man Räikkönen does. Very interesting duel between Massa and Trulli, just one thousand dividing these two; Montoya goes back to scoring points again.

Despite his comeback in Q2, the final session went back into Fernando's hand, who has the upper hand against both Ferrari. Button and Räikkönen, the other early contenders for the championship are scoring points as well. Interesting fact: The last three point positions are held by Jenson, Jarno and Jacques.

Round 6: Spain

We are in Barcelona and the crowd only wants to see one thing: their hero Alonso winning everything. And Q1 looked good for the Spaniard, with full ten points going to Renault again. Fisichella being second only helps Fernando. But the fight for P2 was very hot with only twenty thousands diving P2 and P5.

Unfortunately for Renault though, Schumacher once again became unpopular with local fans by beating Alonso (fair and square though) and whereas Fisichella being second aided Alonso in the last session it hurt him this time around. A strong Trulli also managed to squeeze in between the German and his nemesis.

But for Q3, the old order among the top three was restored with Alonso taking pole in front of Fisico and the Red Baron. Further back the line, Räikkönen and Button had a weak session, merely able to fight for the last point, a duel which Button barely manages to win.

Round 7: Monaco

The tight streets of Monte Carlo are the home of Round 7 of the world championship. And just like last year, Räikkönen pulled of an impressive lap, this time around winning Q1. Alonso however is not too troubled by this as he manages to take P2. Massa's chance at points is ruined by him crashing.

Result: K. Räikkönen - F. Alonso - M. Webber - R. Schumacher - J. Montoya - C. Klien - G. Fisichella - R. Barrichello

And Q2 does not bring a change at the top, Räikkönen keeps going on strongly and he has to, because Alonso is still on his toes. Schumacher returns to point scoring form with sixth place in the second session. A strong double points finish for Williams and Coulthard's fourth place shows the uniqueness of Monaco.

Q3 was a controversal topic with Schumacher looking for a nice place to park his Ferrari (you know, the usual trouble in Monaco). But 10 points are 10 points, he wins this session and makes up two points on second placed Fernando. Webber can be very happy with a third place, scoring his first podium since Melbourne

Round 8: United Kingdom

Fernando Alonso adds another 10 points to his tally in Q1, but perhaps the bigger story is Villeneuve's second place, beating Felipe Massa for it. Fisichella came one thousand short of beating the Brazilian. Schumacher loses grip of Alonso with only scoring sixth place.

Result: F. Alonso - J. Villeneuve - F. Massa - G. Fisichella - N. Heidfeld - M. Schumacher - J. Montoya - G. Fisichella

Alonso keeps winning, after scoring his tenth win in Q1, he manages to held on to it for Q2. Räikkönen however refuses to give up and stays close with Alonso for this time. Schumacher improves his position, but Fisichella and Quick Nick block him from staying closer with the Spaniard.

Finally a full hat-trick, Alonso wins every session of Silverstone. Räikkönen is still very strong and Michael finally makes the podium. A strong finish for Felipe Massa gives him five points. BMW Sauber are just not able to stay close to the pack around, only finishing ninth and tenth, so no points.

Will STR or MF1 score any points? Super Aguri won't I don't think they made Q2 all season. Apparently STR were quite competitive at quali in China due to being on Michelins.

Well, Honda dropped the ball on development quite badly during mid-season.
And Toro Rosso look good for China, let's wait and see.

Round 9: Canada

Fernando just keeps going and going, it seems like no one can possibly stop the Renault - that's the impression one might get from the results. But Kimi was extremely close and Schumacher may as well have a chance at attacking Alonso. Nick Heidfeld is very strong as well, scoring fourth place.

Whereas the rivals were quite close in Q1, Q2 was way easier for Fernando Alonso to win, beating Michael clearly. Juan Pablo Montoya finally goes back to the form that made him the championship leader some races ago and gets third place. Rosberg is strong as well, scoring five points.

For the second time in a row, Alonso wins every session of one qualifying, only aiding his desire for that title win. Briatore can be quite happy with Q3 because Giancarlo Fisichella completes the 1-2. Jarno Trulli has a very strong fourth place. It really looks though as nobody has a chance against Fernando this year.

Round 10: United States

The (Ferrari) Empire Strikes Back! A true one-two for the Italian squad, Massa beating the great Michael by exactly one half of a second. Another team looking really good in the first session is BMW Sauber with a third place by Nick and a fifth place by Jacques. Alonso lost out totally, not scoring points at all.

Just as he was dominated in Q1, Schumacher decided to go aggressive in the second part of this qualifying and to win by exactly the same margin as he was beaten before. Alonso loses again, not able to score any points at all. BMW Sauber keep going on and adds five points to their tally.

Round 11: France

Formula 1 goes back to Europe and after Ferrari's great comeback in the USA, it looks closer now than it did before moving overseas. Seventh-placed Montoya surprisingly chose to leave F1, giving De La Rosa another shot. Trulli is not buzzed and proves his reputation as a qualifying master with the first win for Toyota.

But unfortunately for the Japanese works effort, Ferrari retake the #1 spot in the second session with Schumacher being an unstoppable force, beating his brother by half a second. Alonso manages to improve his position. Pedro De La Rosa scores the first points of his comeback in P8.

Round 12: Germany

Surely the German fans must expect their local hero to take some convincing wins in Hockenheim, but Felipe Massa is a spoilsport and takes the ten points for himself. Schumacher however is still in a good position with P2. De La Rosa scores his best finish so far and Honda returns to the points.

Michael restores the old order however in Q2 with him being the only car lower than 1:14.000 whereas Massa takes a good second place. Button returns to the podium after not scoring at all in France. Fernando Alonso has really been hurt by the ban of the mass damper system, only eight place for him.

Due to a low fuel load, the Ferrari were not able to match Räikkönen but secure two podium finishes. With both Schumacher and Alonso being slapped with two-second penalties, the remote title contenders must now use their chances if they want to play a part in the title decision and Massa heeds the call with a nice fastest lap in Q1. Robert Kubica has a brilliant debut in fourth place, just behind Button.

Felipe seems to know about his chance to make ground on both leaders, because he keeps pushing and wins Q2 as well. Despite Alonso being robbed of any chance at scoring points, Fisichella makes some points for Renault, which really struggle to stay in front in the constructor's title race.

And once again Räikkönen was the man the beat once larger fuel loads came into play. After having suffered humiliation in Hungary, both Alonso and Schumacher were back in the hunt: But neither of them manages to win Q1 in Turkey; Massa is the one who managed that feat. But Michael Schumacher cuts Alonso's remaining lead in half with a little help from his younger brother.

Ouch! Michael Schumacher slaps F1 in its collectivity by being one second faster than any other car on the track. Round 15: Italy

The last European round is in Monza. This puts pressure on the Ferraris. But Michael Schumacher, being the driver that he is, manages to cope perfectly, scoring ten points in Q1. But Alonso stays close with a second place. Rather surprisingly, Nick Heidfeld scores a great third place, cleary beating Räikkönen.

Schumacher was the winner in Q1 and young Felipe Massa just couldn't let it slide. He wins Q2 but second placed finisher Kubica is perhaps more shocking. The two main title contenders only manage to take fourth and sixth respectively with Schumacher gaining more advantage over his Spanish rival.

Now larger fuel loads come into play. Well, larger for most part, really. With Räikkönen going lighter than his competition he does manage to beat Schumi by the shortest of margins. BMW Sauber are strong again, finishing third with Nick Heidfeld. Alonso once again is clearly beaten by Schumacher.

Round 16: China

Those raindrops keep falling on their heads. But that doesn't mean Alonso's eyes would soon be turning red. Crying's not for him ... because he wins Q1 and takes a big bite out of Schumi's lead. With Fisichella being second, Renault gets the good result they were propably longing for. No one cares though, since STR score their first points.

Unfortunately, the great story of Toro Rosso does not continue in Q2. The only important point of the second session is Alonso retaking the lead in the championship. Schumacher can barely rescue himself into Q3 despite having the big disadvantage on the Bridgestone tyres.

Now here's a surprise, Renault manage to win 1-2 in Q3 as well with Fisico once again being worse than Fernando. Both Hondas line up directly behind them. A truly brilliant lap from Schumi places him sixth, splitting the McLaren with their superior Michelin tyres. But still, after this events he still has to make up 16 points.

Round 17: Japan

Schumacher and Ferrari have to strike back now if they want to win the driver's title. And they fail dramaticly. While Felipe Massa does what he needs to do by winning Q1, Schumacher loses even more ground on Alonso, who duly takes sixth place. Impressive comeback to the points by Rosberg who manages to post the third-fastest time.

With Schumacher getting kicked in the rear by Todt he picks up his game in Q2 and wins it by being around a second faster than the competition. This is what he really needed to do. And with Alonso down in eight place, his advantage has suffered a big loss. His failure to get out of Q2 finally ends Räikkönen's title hunt.

Q3 is again a Ferrari affair with Massa surprisingly being allowed to beaten Schumacher. Alonso finally improves his game and takes fifth place behind the Toyota cars. It's going to be down to the wire with five points between Fernando Alonso and Michael Schumacher.

Round 18: Brazil

"Mann gegen Mann" ("man against man")- a German song by Rammstein which does ... NOT describe the situation in the championship final, since it's actually about homosexuality. Massa takes another Q1 victory in his home country, whereas the Schumacher brothers unite against Alonso. Michael makes up some points and Ferrari wins the team title.

Q2 is a full-on repeat of Japan, Schumacher takes another dominating victory (although not as dominating as Massa in Q1). Felipe Massa does a brilliant job and keeps second place, taking points and the lead away from Alonso. With only two points between the two superstars this looks like a really hot title race in Q3.

But fate is a cruel mistress: a fuel pressure problem destroyed his title chance. With him out of the picture, Alonso does not risk too much and takes an acceptable fourth place to become a two-times world champion. Felipe Massa at least gives Ferrari a little piece of happiness with a clear win taking third place in the championship from Räikkönen.

2007 Formula One season
Round 1: Australia

A new year with new drivers - this always is exciting. Räikkönen welcomes himself to Ferrari with a nice win. The biggest surprise, however, is Hamilton's brilliant second place. BMW Sauber are looking very strong as well. Mark Webber starts of his season with two points for Red Bull and Super Aguri make their first point in F1.

Alonso had to impress on his first race with McLaren. In Q2, he did just that by winning. Hamilton continues an amazing debut with third place. Fisichella scores his first points as Renault lead driver in sixth. Jarno Trulli beats his team mate to score the first points of Toyota's 2007 season. Felipe Massa got unlucky and had to stop his car on track.

Again Q3 is done with race fuel loads and Räikkönen takes back what he won in Q1 and lost in Q2. Once again, it was quite close: Alonso was only half a tenth of a second off the Finn's impressive time. Heidfeld gets himself another podium finish. Interestingly, from P5 downwards the Q3 results equal the ones from Q2.

Round 2: Malaysia

McLaren look like the team to beat and they prove it with a brilliant 1-2 in Sepang's Q1. No new point scorers in the first session with Coulthard barely beaten by Webber for eight place. Kubica and Heidfeld are still looking good, sandwiching Felipe Massa. Trulli adds another two points to Toyota's tally.

After dropping out in Australia, Felipe Massa had ground to make up. And so he did, finishing just behind Alonso. The Spaniard once again grabbed F1 by the throat. Räikkönen and Hamilton line up behind them. A new point scorer comes into play with Rosberg getting Williams' first point with Toyota engines.

Massa just keeps on getting better in the heat of Malaysia. A great lap in Q3 wins him the qualifying session by three tenths of a second. Alonso has to take a backseat to Massa but one can doubt he minds with him scoring the most points in Malaysia. Rosberg improves a lot and ends up sixth.

Round 3: Bahrain

Felipe Massa has to make ground on the championship leaders. A first place in Q1 is certainly helpful when you're trying to do this.The strenghts of the F1 teams have not changed yet with McLaren vs. Ferrari being the main battle with BMW behind them. Interestingly, Kubica only made a point by one thousand of a second.

The Brazilian sees a chance to get some major points here and used it. Another fastest lap and another ten points for Massa. Both McLaren settle behind him in second and third place. Sadly for Super Aguri they could not stay in the points with Webber making the first points of this event.

Round 4: Spain

Despite the fact that the Spanish crowd expects a McLaren win, they won't be happy with Q1. While McLaren won and got sixteen points out of it, Hamilton clearly beat their local hero by almost half a second to take his first win. Räikkönen gets beaten by Kovalainen who scores the first points of his career.

Q2 only resulted in Alonso dropping even further away from the lead with him only finishing in fourth. This also costs him the lead in the driver's championship with Hamilton finishing second in Q2. In the lower points positions, Kovalainen drops out of the points again while Coulthard makes his first points finish in 2007.

Round 5: Monaco

Monaco is the most challenging race of the Formula 1 season. Normally, no rookie should win here. Hamilton, however, is not a normal rookie and wins Q1. Impressive performance by Liuzzi who scores points for STR in fifth. Honda also score their first points by beating BMW.

The biggest story of Q2 is Kimi parking his car shortly before the finish without setting a time at all. Alonso takes 10 points and retakes the lead in the championship. Felipe Massa takes third place behind the untouchable McLaren cars. BMW are back in the game with fifth and fourth.

Round 6: Canada

Ferrari have catch-up to do and Canada is supposed to be the place to do it. Räikkönen has a good start and manages to take the full 10 points. Unfortunately, Massa does not manage to beat the McLaren drivers and only starts fourth. Fisichella in his Renault is the only other driver able to be under 1'16's.

Result: K. Räikkönen - F. Alonso - L. Hamilton - F. Massa - G. Fisichella - N. Heidfeld - R. Barrichello - N. Rosberg

However, Kimi's success was not to last very long. He makes it through to Q3 but ninth place does not earn you anything in this championship. McLaren are unstoppable, Hamilton beating his Spanish team mate. Nick Heidfeld scores a good third place but is half a second off Hamilton's time.

Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton have one goal: success in all three sessions. And well, they got it. At first it even looked like a 1-2, but Nick Heidfeld manages to take second place. Massa and Räikkönen are only 0.001 apart, Ralf Schumacher scores his first points of this year and rookie Sebastian Vettel becomes the youngest point scorer of all time.

Heidfeld's heroics of Q1 are (unfortunately?) a unique event, McLaren take the full 18 points in Q2. Ferrari close in and take third and fourth with Heidfeld down in fifth. For the first time since Brazil 2006 both Renault are in the points, while Sebastian Vettel continues his successful debut with an eigth place, beating Webber and Trulli to it.

Hamilton is already 17 points away from his team mate, so he needed to score in Q3 and he did, pole for Hamilton and two points taken off Alonso's advantage. Both Ferrari line up behind them, Massa being more than a tenth faster than his team mate. Vettel becomes the second driver after Hamilton to finish in the points during every session of his debut weekend.

Fernando Alonso leads the championship, but his team mate doesn't like it one bit. Hamilton therefore tries his hardest and wins in Q1. With Alonso in fourth, this are 5 points of his advantage gone. Kovalainen shows a convincing performance and becomes best of the rest and Kubica beats his own team mate to the pointy by five thousands of a second.

Hamilton's dominance continues and further 10 points are added to his tally. Massa and Räikkönen swap places, sixth thousands are the difference between them. Alonso's disappointing saturday continues with only a fifth place behind an improving Kubica. Schumacher and Webber drop out of the points and Heidfeld and Fisichella enter them.

Kimi Räikkönen and Lewis Hamilton make mistakes in corners which took a lot of time out of their laps. Fernando Alonso was struck by fate with a failing gearbox. Unfortunately though, Alonso decides to tell the Queen and her people a big "bathplug you" and takes the 10 points. BMW completely buries the possible Renault attack.

Round 10: Germany

Alonso is leading the championship, although only by the closest of margins possible. Therefore, taking a win in Q1 is decisive and he does just that. Hamilton is again beaten by Ferrari. Robert Kubica is becoming a true threat to both the leaders and his own team mate while Alexander Wurz scores his first comeback points in a double points finish for WilliamsF1.

Both McLaren are too busy battling each other in Q2 which allows Massa to take another victory in order to breathe some life into Ferrari's title hunt. Nick Heidfeld feels the threat of his team mate and pushes hard to stay close to him, while Webber scores two handy points for Red Bull Racing Renault.

A horrific accident costs Hamilton dearly. He's thankfully okay, but Alonso is free to give himself a neat advantage. Eight points for second place do indeed please the Spanish driver. Räikkönen finishes the Nürburgring qualification with a good win. Heidfeld shows Kubica who's boss and beats him.

Round 11: Hungary

Lewis Hamilton had to take a backseat to his team mate in Great Britian and on the Nürburgring - this was not to be repeated. Hamilton takes a win in Q1 and ... nobody really cares. The true talking point is Heikki Kovalainen, finishing in an amazing second place in front of Robert Kubica among others.

Sadly, Kovalainen's heroics are worthless in Q2 and he fails to reproduce them, only finishing 12th. Jarno Trulli is not bothered, but he proves his reputation as a one-lap legend, beating Kimi Räikkönen quite convincingly to third place. Ferrari fails at fuel and Massa stays in P14, ruining his chances of further points.

Controversy ruins the third session of the Eastern European qualifying. Alonso blocks his team mate in the pits and assured himself the pole position. Shockingly he goes unpunished, but McLaren-Mercedes lose all points earned on this weekend. Ferrari struggle with Massa not even in Q3 and Räikkönen being beaten by Nick Heidfeld.

Round 12: Turkey

With both McLaren drivers being equal on points, you'd think Q1 was all about them. Well, it was not. Kimi Räikkönen made the first session in Turkey his slave and takes the full 10 points. In other stories: Anthony Davidson nearly makes a miracle come true and score further points for Super Aguri, just losing out to Rosberg.

Alonso took the lead in the title battle and extends it with the win in Q2. In what may very well be considered an unique event, two driver pairings in the points manage to achieve equal lap times. Kovalainen amazingly is just as fast as Istanbul specialist Massa and both BMW Sauber show equal speed.

Massa proves his love for the Turkish track by finishing first in Q3, beating both McLarens and his team mate. Hamilton comes back from two losses and kicks Fernando's rear (not literally, though). Kubica once again triumphs over Heidfeld and Rosberg scores his third eight place in a row.

High speed matters in Monza. The best engine in the field is the V8 Mercedes powerplant. Do the math. Obviously both Hamilton and Alonso will decide the winner amongst themselves and Fernando has the upper hand against his young team mate. Rubens Barrichello scores his and Honda's first points in a long time.

One. One different point scorer. One bathplugging different point scorer ... wait, why am I complaining? This makes my life a lot easier. You see, there were no points of excitement in Q2 at all, which is why we should celebrate Jenson Button's point in the actually quite beautiful RA107.

There is no change on the Q3 podium, Alonso and Hamilton celebrate a 1-2 for McLaren. Both did most likely not expect what was going to happen a few days afterwards: the disqualification of the McLaren team from the 2007 Formula 1 Constructor's World Championship. Heidfeld beats Kubica and gives himself a bit of breathing space.
